Might it be something other than male pattern baldness?

Ok, I am almost 100% certain it is male pattern baldness sadly. I have temporal recession and what looks like the characteristic island forming. It's annoying as I've been steadily receeding for years but always kept checking and thinking it's not too bad yet, until the whole front thinned and it looked horrific.

What makes me just a little bit wonder if it could be something else is the fact that my sides which should be my 'safe zone' are thinning as well, quite considerably.
I'm sure this is what's known as retrograde alopecia, or basically i'm doomed for something beyond the norwood scale.
My 2 year older brother has not as bad recession as me annoyingly, but his sides seem thinner. So I guess it is just genetic male pattern baldness.
My mother has something wrong with her thyroid, but I got that checked and the Doctor said mines fine.
Is there anything else it could be? If so any tests?

It's annoying that both my grandfathers died with a full head of white hair, and my father and uncle from mothers side will most likely be the same by the looks of it, but me and my brother will be completely hairless.

Your sides thinning is not characteristic of male pattern baldness. It is characteristic of hair loss that is unrelated to androgens. It could perhaps be Telogen Effluvium, or maybe it is the result of some kind of deficiency that you may have. I recommend you see a dermatologist to get a professional opinion. Your receding temples are a definitive sign of androgenic hairloss, however, so it seems that perhaps you have Androgenetic Alopecia in addition to some other form of hair loss. Either way, it is best to get a dermatologist to look at your hair and make the correct diagnosis.

Show pics, I've come across a lot of posts from people who thought they were thinning on the sides or back, and guess what, they weren't. It doesn't mean **** if you can see your scalp with buzzed hair, everyone can.

Picture of side when hair was long and now it's buzzed. Definitely some serious male pattern baldness, hairs are miniaturised.
