Hi all long time lurker here,

I came across something weird today and wanted to get your thoughts on it. I went to my regular pharmacy (well known pharmacy chain in Australia) for a Propecia refill. I handed the prescription to the pharmacist and after about 5 minutes she came back and asked if I wanted to try a new generic which cost $60 cheaper. At first I said no because I've experimented with generics in the past and had mixed results, but then she mentioned that it's a brand new product made by the same company which makes Propecia (Merck Sharp & Dohme), and after a few seconds of deliberation decided to try it. I haven't taken any pills of the new finasteride yet, just wanted to see if anyone came across it. Here is a side-by-side comparison with Propecia:

Not sure if it's relevant but I live in Australia (in case it's only available in Australia). This is the only information I was able to find about the "FINASTERIDE-1MG": http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcmed.nsf/pages/mkcfi1mg/$File/mkcfi1mg.pdf

Let me know what you think.

Cheers

So Merck made their own generic for Finasteride? Strange. Why didn't they just lower the price for their main brand, would have made more sense.

no, you get the idiots who overpay for name brand because they are paranoid about generics, and will always overpay for propecia. So you just come out with a generic alongside namebrand to compete with other generics, even though there is literally no difference

This is true. Most people will buy the expensive name brand if you put it out there. Merck is just trying for a chunk of he generic market while they're at it.
