Men that are using Nizoral shampoo...

I spoke to a pharmacist today and a friend who is a hair stylist, and he knows quite a bit about hair loss. They both said they've never heard of Nizoral as a hairloss treatment - it's only for dandruff. Also, the Nizoral website doesn't appear to say anything about using it for hair loss on their website. However, everyone on this site seems to say Nizoral is important to use for treatment about every 3rd day. What's going on here? I'm receiving all this conflicting info and I don't know if Nizoral will help hairloss, not affect it, or make it worse.

Just a bit of background info, I'm 25, slight hairloss in front only, been on finasteride for 3 months.

Thanks for any advice!

"Officially" Nizoral is only for dandruff but there have been studies which have proved Ketoconazole, the active ingredient in Nizoral, effective against hair loss. I wouldn't expect a hair stylist to know about Nizoral as an effective treatment for male pattern baldness, it's kind of "hidden information" that only people who actually are suffering from male pattern baldness tend to know. How effective a shampoo can actually be has always been under debate but you can also buy 2% Nizoral cream. I myself apply Nizoral cream to my balding areas every other day.

I am new here and wondering about this too.. All I am reading is that there is shedding...

Although Wikipedia reports a few studies of success.. A 2002 study says that density was not increased, but shaft diameter increased and shedding decreased...

Nizoral is an anti-fungal shampoo that kills the fungi that cause seborrhea and dandruff. Groups of individuals have discovered that Nizoral (when used regularly) is a very useful alopecia treatment, once again it would appear that the role of a substance for the treatment of hair-loss is stumbled upon accidentally

Scientists shaved mice repeatedly and applied either ketoconazole or a vehicle solution to their skin and the mice who received ketoconazole repeatedly demonstrated "a macroscopically significant stimulatory effect". In other words their hair grew like crazy.

True, but not everything that works in mice such as in these studies applies the same way to humans otherwise they would never waste money doing trials on people. Nizoral is much over hyped given its body of evidence saying it works and it might to some degree I am not saying it does not. Its just not anywhere as rock solid proven as say rogain or propecia which is what you should be using if you want to stop male pattern baldness not a shampoo. Some guys are told to use nizoral as some way to prevent or slow male pattern baldness and I just dont see the evidence that would happen your still going bald with or without it.

What a crock of sh1t. Every one of those studies was done on humans except the one you focused on. Also Nizoral was well known and had tons of anecdotal reportsd in the late 90s before any of those studies ever came out. It was mentioned in a ton of the bodybuilding mags I read as helping steroid users keep their when they cycled

Do u live in the uk? Because if u do go in boots stores and see what section nizoral and their own brand ketoconazole are in, they're in the hair loss section right next to the minoxidil, ofcourse this proves nothing but it shows that it's an open secret that nizoral is used as much for hair loss than dandruff, I suffer from both so it's a god send, I started using nizoral Nd minoxidil at the same time so it's hard to say which but my hair loss stopped instantly , my only advice is honestly don't use the stuff too frequently, I upped my usage to everyday and it make my hair weak and fall out, 2-3 times a week, just use normal shampoo then nizoral and leave it in for about 5 mins, the way I see it it's so cheap and there is evidence behind it so why not ? Plus in my opinion it keeps your hair looking good, hope this helps
