Hi neglected my hair, and now have a massive bald spot on the crown. it's not completely bald, but probablly lost around 90% of the hair there the remaining is very thin.

From what I've read the earlier you treat the baldness the better off you will be, stuff like rogain, won't help once the follicle is dead. So if it too late to regain the hair? I know it will never go back to normal. Is the best I can hope for it prevent further loss?

That's beyond a bald spot mate. You're a Norwood 5/6. I would start with finasteride and nizoral. Some people can see significant regrowth on them alone. You really need to stabilise that hair loss because you're very close to being an egghead.

What about minoxidil? Should I start that as well

You may get some thickening with Finasteride and minoxidil but realistically you have left it too late. You need to start looking at transplants.

damn. Hopefully those treatments will prevent further loss. IF I do get transplants, wont the transplanted follicles also start dying off like the original did?

No. They only take hair from areas that are resistant to dht. However the supply of donor hair is limited don't expect full density.
