Oh yeah, family history:

My dad has GREAT hair. No recession or thinning at all, all black, and he's almost 60!

The only thing odd about him, is that he's always had a grey spot right on his vertex where my thinning is.............. it always looked like someone dripped paint on his head

Could there be some genetic thing where that area experiences more degeneration than the rest of the scalp? Or that he only went grey.. but I'd have to go bald??

Hello there, yes there could be some genetic thing where that area experiences more degeneration than the rest of the scalp. I think u should look at our other family memebers and compare them wth mum's father. Think u could not have inheirted from your own dad since he has thick hair. I think your male pattern baldness is the mild form and i think eventually it will result in the patchy male pattern baldness i stated earlier.

The main thing that I'm confused about, is what my method of hairloss is.

If it truely were a DHT issue that propecia or something could cure... would that not thin my hair out first?

Each individual strand is still as thick as it ever was... which to me, doesn't sound like a case of DHT clogging follicles, etc.

Certain follicles are just deciding to quit and give up.. and lower my density... that is the true question I am asking, and seeking an answer for.

Also, the pics make it look a lot worse than it is due to the flash.. lukcily in the right lighting, you still can't see scalp :D

Thing also about my head is.. I have a raised bump in my skull right at the vertex.. which fans out my thickass chinese hair to make it look even less dense :freaked:

I'm scared of internal DHT blocking pills though.. there aren't any long-term studies on it, or its impact on the children of users. There are some things that I'm willing to sacrifice looks for, and that is for my kid's well being.

U have to understand that why male pattern baldness exibits a pattern where the front and the vertex thin or fall out first is because there is higher activity in those those areas. then the rest of the hair gets clogged by the DHT and stuff and miniturises as a result....ths is why male pattern baldness often leads to total baldness after a long time. according to me i think this theory is possible:

Since those areas start to thin, the rest of the areas get the "signal" to start to thin and fall out as well.....BUT for some it doesnt because their hair could be "strong resistant" to the DHT. If this is the case, then that person will end up as what i coin as "patchy male pattern baldness"....

and since u stated that the rest of your hair has the same thickness as before i assume u are suffering from "patchy male pattern baldness". If u stated how long since u had male pattern baldness started, i can be able to give u a better idea if yours is the 2nd case.

I'm 21 now, and I've always had a lot of scalp see-through on my vertex ever since I was around 14.

Its just that now, it seems more spread-out, and I see a lot of scalp when I part my hair along the top as well.

Also, what is the effect of getting haircut w/ people who use thinning shears? Does it give you more volume, or make you look like you're going bald when you have coarse hair?

So, yeah. I think if I were able to maintain what I have now I'd be happy. Hopefully Nizoral plus another mild regrowth/dht inhibiter will do the trick.

PS
My hair texture and hairline definitely came from my dad who has great hair.
My mom's side of the family has thinner hair that doesn't feel like mine at all. I dunno about my grand dad, but my uncle has thin hair/high forehead, but I don't recall seeing TOO much scalp.

hey man my hair is exactly like yours. I'm 21 also and have really thick hair all over my head. But over the last 8 or so months my crown is really starting to thin out.

I first noticed hairs falling out without gradual thinning of the hair but after a few months the hairs that were falling out were gradually thinning toward the root.

So my best guess is that you are in the early stages of male pattern baldness.

I stop the barber when she wants to use those thinning shears because it makes my crown look really bare and thin.

hope this helps.
