From your experience, how fast can male pattern baldness progress? for example, from norwood 1 to 2 to 3....

also taking into account treatmenss with rogaine (3 years), propecia (3 months), nizoral (2 months)

must have been something other that male pattern baldness, surely. Telogen Effluvium?

if it was loss in a typical male pattern baldness pattern (both temples, crown) it probably is male pattern baldness. The difficult thing about male pattern baldness is that it progresses differently for everybody. Some lose initially and get a "mature hairline" then dont get any more loss for decades, while others get immediate and relentless progression. This makes it difficult to impossible to know how aggressive to be with hair loss products, as I am sure that some people's loss would have stopped whether or not they took meds (propecia, minoxidil). As there is no way of knowing what your genetically determined hair loss patern will be all a person can do now is recognize the problem and fight it (learn a lot and choose the meds that give you the most hope)

thanks for all your responses.... the loss that i encountered was both temples and hairline.. the crown (which to my understanding is the back of the head - typical baldspot) was not gotten worse. since starting propecia 11 weeks ago, my frontal hairline and temples (and only in frontal) has gone from PERFECT to possibly norwood 3... it is really freaken me out... is this the normal dreaded propecia shed?

I need to regrow the hair i lost.... more, i need to stop losing hair every day.... honestly, there are mornings i wake up and see a dramatic change in my hairline..

I first notice male pattern baldness when I was 18, I wore long hair and I noticed that the parting was becoming wider. I cut it and weared combed forward (beatlesque), end of story. When I was 20 someone pointed out that I was starting to thin at the crown. That´s when I started to worry, I started looking at it regularly, and since then my male pattern baldness hasn´t progressed almost anything. Without treatment. (til last year)

So, 7 years since onset, and almost no progression here.

And, also, I´ve seen a lot of people who seemed to go bald quickly but suddenly they stop and stay the same for a lot of years.

But for me, I cannot live with the fear of sudden attack of male pattern baldness, so I have started big 3. If only for peace of mind, I recommend it.

I'd say that it can happen sometimes "overnight". I had a friend that lost almost all of his hair it seemed, in a week. But, to be fair, he had MS so it could have been a complication.

I have a male pattern baldness accelerated by Telogen Effluvium, I think, and I went from Norwood 1(or better if there is such a thing) to Norwood 2.5 in 4 months. I would die for 2-3 years.

Are you sure it was the Propecia that stabilized your hair. Mabye the shedding just stopped. From what I understand that level of shedding is almost always temporary.

well, for the past 2 years, it seemed like i was constantly shedding lots of hair.. everytime i put on rogaine in the morning, and combed my hair (mind you after showering already), i found 15+ hairs... in addition there were hundreds of hairs on the rug that had accumulated in only a year..

2 years ago mind you, i had really really thick hair... less than i year ago, i remember looking at my hairline and noticing how thick it was... it was nearly perfect... in march it started going bad.. now in june, it is nearly depleted... it that what they call accellerated male pattern baldness?

i started using propecia, lasercomb early march when my harline was still intact..

I would definitely call that accelerated male pattern baldness. Has your shedding picked up in the past few months to account for your depleted hairline? Maybe you should give Dr. Lee a try if you haven't already. It seems to me that he would likely tell you to stop with Propecia in order to get the shedding under control(that is, if your shedding has increased recently). I currently average about 40 hairs in the sink every morning after I shower.

thanks for your response.. yes, i did contact Dr. Lee.. he told me i had accelerated male pattern baldness, which could be recovered with treatment.. he also thought i had Telogen Effluvium limited to the frotnal hairline, in which a month later he denied ever stating.. i did a pull test, and noticed many hairs in the telegon phase only in front..

i dont khow whether i beleive him.. he was only responding to my email, not giving me a direct checkup..

PS: there is little history in my fam with male pattern baldness.. only my dad and his first cousin have it..

Well, I do think I have Telogen Effluvium, but I also have male pattern baldness and it seems that most of my hair falls from the temples and crown. Maybe you already stated, but do you have an inciting event for Telogen Effluvium? With my Telogen Effluvium I can clearly point to a specific event, the worst thing ever to happen in my life, and the time frame fits perfectly with Telogen Effluvium. Regardless of whether or not I have Telogen Effluvium, I am not getting anything back on my temples. It is clearly male pattern baldness and my inciting event sped up my hairloss by about 10 years.

I don't know whether you should believe Dr. Lee or not either, but he certainly knows a lot about hairloss (eventhough he's trying to sell products), much more than your average Derm.

I've never had a bald person in my family at least back to my great grandparents, except my brother who went rapidly bald in his early 20's and who is now completely bald. Oh, yeah, and the other day I was eating lunch at a restaurant and I noticed a woman at the counter with what looked like a bald spot and when she turned around I realized it was my Aunt.

yeah, its funny.. my mom (53) has a lot less hair than me on top, but similar thinning areas. it seems to me like i am suffering from FPB and male pattern baldness at the same time... actually, thats not really funny..

i hope that propecia triggered my Telogen Effluvium/Accelerated-start of male pattern baldness... besides intense psychological stress, i cant think of anything else that may have triggered a Telogen Effluvium..

i did notice that my scale did itch a lot more when i was losing my hair.. i even used listerine twice on my scalp to stop the itch... maybe it made my hair weaker.. i dunno.. i am just hoping i got through i regrowth soon.. i wanna be diffuse thinner again, with no male pattern baldness

Well, I have a specific inciting event, but its all about debilitating stress also. Is your stress just an ongoing thing or did it have a beginning? Maybe it is from Propecia, I can't say that I've had that but maybe I have or will, I certainly hear a lot of people around here talking about it.

I've never heard of using Listerine on a scalp, but what do I know?
