Hi guys, I came across this forum and been reading up on a few things and I had a few questions. Im 21 years old and for about the past year and a half my hair has become very thin on the top and my hairline is receding just a little bit. Ive had a weird hairline since I was about 15 or 16 and its just going back a little more as I get older. Anyways, when I was 19 I noticed the hairline going back a little more but didnt think much of it. Then when I turned 20 I realized that the hairline went back a little more towards the temples, but now my hair was thinning on top. I started using minoxidil then and didnt see much of anything but kept using it and still am. In December of 2011 I was at my dermatologist and she just asked me if my dad was bald and I told her yes and she glanced at my head and prescribed me 1mg of Propecia. I just stopped taking it because it didnt seem to be doing too much.
Now this leads to my question. I have a really oily scalp like I can wash my hair in the morning and by lunchtime my hair is oily, greasy and nasty. I usually keep my hair cut short but if I let it grow longer the sides of my hair will grow normal and the hair on top will grow longer too but its really thin and doesnt grow as thick as the sides do. I was reading that if I do a tug test on my hair and if you can pull out more than 4 or 5 hairs that still have the white bulb attached to the bottom it could be telogen effluvium. When I pull the hairs out they do have the bulbs on the bottom and when I do it I can pull out like 7 or 8 hairs at a time but only on the top of my head. So from what I described can this be male pattern baldness or should I go see another doctor to check for something else? Also if its any help the only people in my family who are bald are my dad who has been bald since he was about 26-27 and his brother who is about 40 now and is almost completely bald but not like my dad. My dads other brother is in his 50s and not bald and no one else on my dads side is bald. My moms side has just her uncle who was bald.
