male pattern baldness at 20?

I'm almost 22 years old and I would call myself as a REALLY late bloomer. People still ask me for ID and think I'm 17 years old.

I have started to get chest hair and shoulder hair and have also noticed thinning on top and in the vertex which I think started 2 years ago (I have naturally thin hair so I've never noticed male pattern baldness until someone pointed out that my vertex is thinning). I have an ok amount of facial hair but it's still growing in. I'm seeing my doctor soon to get bloodwork done.

Can this be male pattern baldness at such a young age?

My family does have male pattern baldness but talking with my dad, he said he didn't start thinning until his 30s. This has me a bit worried. My mom has thin hair also and her father is high up there in the Norwood scale but I don't know when he started thinning.

Yes, it does happen to young people. Im only 23 and been loseing my hair for years. Also I know a 16 year old nw5! Just have a look around the forum and you will see plenty of young men loseing hair.

from your confession it sounds that you have experienced late puberty.May be your male pattern baldness started 6-12 months ago .I am 23 and my male pattern baldness started at 19.Generally Dht Play its degrading effect on scalp after puberty.

Hypothetically I go on finasteride...any sides from long-term use (being able to have a baby in the future, etc.) or even having a negative impact on my current growth?

Thanks!

do not be so eager ,first consult a good doctor and after results ask for propecia prescription.Finast is a fda approved drug so do not worry for becoming a papa.On using it you will experience low libido and ejaculation. It is for regrowth and not for becoming bald,so you will see some improvement.

Mine started at 19 and at that age I was still being mistaken for 16/17. My dad was ok until his mid 30's, so yes even late developers can start m.p.b young.

Yes, and UNLESS you have a lethal disease or you are blind or seriously physically incapable, male pattern baldness is the worst thing that can happen to you at this age. Perhaps even lifetime.

[quote="haunted-ballroom":9d61d] Also I know a 16 year old nw5!

I also find that VERY hard to believe
i have seen a 5 years old guy with no hair.Due to some genetical defect he has no hair since his birth.[/quote:9d61d]

so? Norwood 5 is not 'no hair', its just balding no hair.

So a 5 year old kid has a Norwood 7 hair pattern? How is it possible without androgentic influence?

Duh, :hairy:
There's a difference between m.p.b and Alopecia!
Children and Women can get Alopecia and lose all their hair (even eyelid and eyebrow hair).
This is not m.p.b like we are experiencing so you cant class it as any Norwood.
