What do you mean by doomed? You were not just diagnosed with AIDS in 1982. There are treatments for hair loss, the earlier you start the better as terrific regrowth is not guaranteed for everyone.
So, you're a year and two months on this forum and still haven't heard of propecia and minoxidil?
If you're over 18, there's no reason not to try it.
Heard of both, but the sides of propecia doesnt sound tempting...and minoxidil seems very weak to be honest. Seems it can restore extremly few hairs and even those hair eventually die and become imune to minoxidil.
I would pay attention to the clinical trials of Finasteride which shows the long term incidences of side effects is extremely small when compared to placebo. I have been taking it for just over 3 weeks now at .5mg/day (brand name) and do not have any change of sexual function. If you really want to keep your hair you should be opened to taking an oral DHT blocker.

there is no predictable pattern for hairloss
Some guys have perfect hair until 36 and go completely bald by 45
some guys are half bald at 25 and stay that way until 50
Except in OP's case we can clearly see the pattern he is balding/going to bald in although agree that noone can really tell the timeline such a thing would occur. OP has the strong centre hairline and then that weak zone forming an upside down Y that goes from the crown to the temples.
The recession might be what is on your mind right now OP but I assure you it will soon be the last assuming that pattern continues to progress.

Maybe start with a small dose though? I really do believe that DHT blockers can potentially cause effects in 10% of men,
although I believe 90% will be fine.
That's just my opinion though.
