this will perhaps apply to those young ones out there (similar to myself) who are scared shitless about their hairloss but experienced advice would be helpfull.

basically my temples have receeded fairly noticably in the last 2 yrs. after seeing a trichologist (spelling) he said what i had was not MPH, merely natural hairline 'alteration' that basically as i broaden and grow so does my head and thus my hairline 'goes back' as the scalp changes and grows. he said an absolute NO to finesteride and said Saw Palemetto. He also said NO to Nizoral!!!

Is this Saw Palemetto any good, can anyone offer advice on it? Could i PLEASE have some advice on some 'natural' or 'topical' ointments/lotions/vitamins/sprays etc that could help me maintain hair and increase the CHANCES of maintaining what i have.

i nothing is definate, but tips/suggestions would be highly appreciated.

P.S anyone in the UK find it normall that so many gp's and dermatologists say no to Finesteride??

re:

He does not know what he is talkng about. There is nothing wrong with nizoral and if you think you are balding hten I would suggest finasteride, mnox and/or spironolactone. Photos of your "hair history" would be helpful in order to make a qualified determination.
Derms appear to be an absolute joke based on my experiences and the experiences of those on this forum.

Yes sir. All the dermatologists and tricologists in the world have been unable to come up with a cure for male pattern baldness. This fact amazes me when I look in the mirror and see a percentage of my hair growing back after twenty years full male pattern baldness. How have I been so lucky or clever if all these qualified skin technicians have been such a collective failure?
I experimented with lots of interesting products and ideas, out of a mixture of desperation and curiosity and have found the combination which works for me.
I believe that I have invented a new key element which brings dead/dormant follicles back to life. I'm still in the early stages of recovery, but every week I see more small terminal hairs where there was vellus and before only a billiard ball!
My device cost about £5000 to build, it isn't a laser, though I use the laser comb as well. Bringing it to the market is going to take time.

Just a guess... as a "trichologist" and presumably not an MD he may not have the ability to prescribe finasteride (propecia). He may also have a strong bias towards "natural" remedies. Before you take his advice search all the boards and google for evidence that herbals including Saw Palmeto grow hair. You wont find any. If you still want to run treatments by him print up the randomized studies on nizoral (thickening hair shafts), propecia (increasing hair counts) and minoxidil (increasing hair counts). Ask him for a single paper on Saw Palmetto related to hair loss. He wont have one. Ask him why he believes it will help... He will probably say that herbals are "safe" and "natural"... Ask for a refund.

Regarding whether you need treatment that is largely a personal decision... Some people do get a recession early on that never moves again, or moves only gradually. If you see norwood there is little harm in treatment, but it IS a lifelong personal commitment.

good luck

As far as I know, you don't need a prescription for Finasteride in the UK

At least, I have never been asked for one

really? In the UK pharmacies dispense medications without a doctor's order? (Like antibiotics, blood pressure meds...) So you can just say I have a cough and need some azithromycin? In the US you can only get the most basic meds (tylenol, aspirin) without a prescription.

the reason many gp's are reluctant to prescribe finasteride is a) because the NHS refuses to subsidise the cost for medication thats only for vanity and b) the drug is too new, so docs dont know enough about it and c) cos they percieve the side effcts to outweigh the benefits.

and yes, finasteride is a POM drug in the UK. you need a prescription if you want it dispensensed in UK pharmacy. however, buying it over the internet usually requires no prescription.

Just a quick reminder:

You do not have to have any qualifications to be a Trichologist.

I can be one right now if I like.

I am now a Trichologist.

In my professional opinion you should take finasteride and buy Minoxidil treatment and my special lasercomb.

That'll be £2000 please.

Hi neiltom
As a junior to a senior poster, all respect and thanks for the laugh.
We can beat the tricologists, you don't have to be one.
When I appear on tv to prove that my invention works for me, all the tricologists and dermatologists will gasp. They may be somewhat put out by the fact that an amateur like myself could find the answer to his own long term male pattern baldness. Will it work for others? I don't know yet. I think I kept enough life in my minaturised follicles with scalp and facial exercises for twenty years. Tom Hagerty didn't invent scalp exercises.
