Ok ... well yeah ,I'm kinda shitting myself by the thought that I'm balding even before my eighteenth , my dad started to get bald at 16 too so it's clearly generic , also my hair seems thinner and I Notice I lose more hair then before , Is there anything I can do against this? Would it be smart to start with finasteride at this age?
this sucks really bad... :shakehead:

I'd advise against this, you still need your hormones for development and for a good few years more.

Given your age, it's really is a case of seeking professional help first of all to determine that you are balding and secondly to see what they recommend.

If finasteride is ruled out for a couple of years (likely) then there's still some decent treatments out there, to help you and stall the process until finasteride can be introduced, so don't despair yet!

I think you are definitely too young to be thinking about finasteride.

I would start using Nizoral twice a week. It is a proven antiandrogen and can help stop or at least slow down the loss.

Do you have excessive dandruff? This is common with early agressive hair loss.

I would be a bit more agressive with Nizoral. See if you can get some 2% shampoo and start using it every other day. Try to leave it in 10-15 minutes if possible.

Alternate the Nizoral shampoo with Pyrithione Zinc Shampoo.

Do not consider finasteride and stay away from minoxidil as well.

Going bald young is sh*t, I really feel for you. However, definitely avoid finasteride until you're at least 18. Presumably you know that DHT production is inhibited by the drug, but you may be less aware of the function of DHT. It has many functions in the body and is heavily involved in many parts of (mainly sexual) development, and blocking its production before the end of puberty could have disastrous, permanent consequences.

I'd stick to topical treatments for now. I don't think minoxidil is licensed for use in under 18s, however I doubt using it would cause any problems and the age restriction is perhaps a result of a lack of testing on younger patients during its trials. I wouldn't recommend you use it until you've seen a specialist first though, as I have no real evidence to back up this claim.

Good luck.

Can someone please suggest Shampoo for me? I want the best. And is Conditioner something I shouldn't use if I'm experiencing hair loss? If it's ok, Can you also recommend conditioner?

And are there any Remedy's like foods to eat or just anything that works I can try?

I posted a thread, here is the link
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=65323

I still have hair, I'm 24, If I'm really proactive about it & try everything I think I can save my hair. Can someone please point me in a direction, so that I can some how be educated/informed of all the good & safe things I can do to help my hair? Not like Propecia (that pill.) or anything like that.
I have hair, but it's been thinning for some time now. I don't want to wait too long.

thank you all so much!

First off, there is not a shampoo that will stop or reverse hair loss, you need treatments that work, read the link in my signature for information on these.

I beg to differ regarding as the shampoos I mentioned above have proven regrowth properties and should be the first products tried by the young. If they do not stop or slow hair loss, then stronger product should be tried.

For that, I would go with topical ketoconazole and miconazole. The sooner scalp DHT receptors are blocked or local conversion of DHT is halted, the better.

I do have quite excessive dandruff , I already went to a doctor (the assistant was there and the official doctor is bald too)
anyways , the assistant said there was nothing you could do about it (I already knew about finasteride and some other stuff before I went there) so I was a bit confused by her ,she also said I have no fading hairline whatsoever (she didn't even look at it closely , there was a huge desk between us) but I keep noticing the small things like a red spot I had under my hair , it's now more visible and there's nearly no hair over it anymore.
Anyways , I'll go there when the official doctor is there and I'll keep you informed... by the way do you need to get those medicines under prescription?

In terms of prescriptions.

It depends on where you live.

In the UK Nizoral and Minoxidil don't need one.

Propecia needs to be bought from a pharmacy, you can import certain non controlled medicines for your own use such as propecia, but please don't, I know your probably very worried and prone to panic but messing round with DHT whilst your still developing will be a huge mistake, and you still don't really know whether or not it's a more mature hairline developing. It's important to realise that there should be a way for you to keep most of your hair.

I think the ideal of starting with Nizoral has some merit, alone it's not enough to stop hair loss but you should be able to pick some up now, and its better than doing nothing until you speak with the other doctor,

I'm not completely panicking and I know using stuff like finasteride is bad now (kinda obvious) I'll first go to a hair cutter and ask if she notices my hairline is fading , if so , straight away to the doctor.

Start alternating Nizoral shampoo with Pyrithione Zinc Shampoo ASAP.

The sooner you start blocking DHT or reducing its scalp production, the better.

Yes that's the stuff.

There are two types 1% and 2% as far as i know as far as hairloss is concerned there's not much difference between them and the 1% is less harsh on the scalp.

I don't see the rush for Nizoral like everyone is suggesting unless you have or know you will get head irritation or inflammation after using Rogaine. Nizoral may just cause unnecessary headaches and brain-fog like it did me

I started losing my hair at 17 and I know how you feel. Yes, it's tough but there are solutions available.

It's too early for finasteride, don't even come near that stuff.

Minoxidil (I suggest the new Rogaine foam) and Nizoral, by the contrary, could be excellent but consult your doctor first.

Today I'm 34 yo and my hair loss and sebum production are under control. Dandruff is still a problem but I'm working on that, as well.

There have been two studies done on the benefits of the active ingredient in Nizoral, both have concluded that the active ingredient helps with hair loss (one study for the shampoo another for the cream)

Are you taking that into consideration?

Are you taking into consideration that if the poster gets these sides they can just stop?

Surely it's worth giving something a try, rather than just giving up.

Why hasn't anyone suggested topical spironolactone, flutamide or even RU (if you're that desperate)?

Definitely take a look at those topicals, if you really want to keep your hair for a couple years without finasteride.

I would like to read up on these studies if it's possible. Out of the big 3, Nizoral is one I know of the least. And what I do know is that it's supposedly treat irritation or inflammation caused by Rogaine and finasteride.

My experience with Nizoral has been quite negative. It not only gave me headaches and brain-fog, it made my scalp incredibly dry and shed my hair intensely. I'm not exaggerating when I say I lost around 200 hairs straight after using it.

I'd be interested to find out if the shedding was a good thing or if maybe Nizoral is just simply to harsh for me.

I hope this link can shed some light

The original shampoo study was from years ago, if you click the link over to the study about the cream then the results are something else, however i don't know enough about systematic absorption to start recommending the cream to a 16 year old.

Funnily enough despite the fact i'm recommending the shampoo, i suffered the dry scalp and some shedding because of the 2% stuff, it really is a harsh shampoo. When i recommend it I'm trying to relay what the consensus is, not what has worked for me. The 1% shampoo is a lot lighter

Shedding is a good thing if it isn't caused by irritation, however if you were anything like me then you can lose hair, which is a listed side effect.

So to anybody trying it, just listen to your scalp it will be obvious after a couple of weeks whether or not nizoral is for you
