A little background info on me. I just turned 19... both grandpa's are bald nw6-7, uncles are getting bald nw3-5, older cousins a few years older are nw3. I've always had a high hairline, but my hair has always been long with bangs so I never noticed until last year that I might be receding. I've become upset and it makes me depressed sometimes to be thinking about hairloss constantly. Friends have made remarks about it (probably because they are balding too and are checking out hairlines). Anyway I've been taking finasteride for 2 weeks and I'm fine, no side effects. I don't buy into the horror stories, and I'm not afraid to keep taking finasteride whatsoever. Only problem... only being 19, I don't have a beard... I'd like to have a beard but wouldn't finasteride prevent my beard from developing more? And if so, would my beard come in if I eventually stop finasteride? And do you think I'm fine taking finasteride at 19 (derm said it was fine, and I haven't grown in a few years)? So yeah any diagnosis of my hairline or advice on what to do would be great, thanks guys for everything!

You have very minimal hairloss at this point. If I were in your position I would not take finasteride at such a young age because you are still growing. Regarding the beard, finasteride will definitely slow down bear growth. DHT is essential in producing facial hair, and when you are blocking upwards of 60-70% of DHT through finasteride, facial hair will come to a slow standstill. Messing around with your DHT levels at this age is not worth it in my opinion.

I'm just not sure what to do, because it seems like everyone in family started to lose their hair pretty early. A double cousin of mine who is a year older is an nw3 now... idk I just done wanna be one of those guys who waits and regrets not doing something about it sooner. I don't wanna live in denial, but I'm so torn on what to do here. I'd like a beard, but I'd rather keep what I have, but then again I don't know if I'm losing my hair. It's all one big annoying circle. I can't stand it, idk what to do.
