Linked is a study on Japanese patients with Androgenetic Alopecia who used Ketoconazole cream only to achieve impressive regrowth. My question is how come I don't see more patients using this cream as a treatment instead of using the shampoo. I personally can only use the shampoo 2-3 times a week and it kind of makes my hair look like sh*t the day after, kind of like dry straw. Looking at the regrowth in this study is it absurd to think someone with mild Androgenetic Alopecia could maintain their hair with daily use of the cream due to its anti androgen effect? Maybe I'm missing something. Many here claim the shampoo is borderline useless while this study shows that the cream can create real results. I'm probably around a Norwood 1.5 and my hair has slowly crept that way since I was 21 (24 now). I have a full head of hair for now but do have some recession so I'm planning ahead as my maternal grandpa is Norwood 7.

Bump, quite interested in this. Can anyone who knows a lot about Ketoconazole reply?

The study is pretty weak. There are less than 10 people in the study and I think only about half of the people responded. Of the people that responded most were very young. Nizoral shampoo is used because it is easy (have to shampoo anyway) and there are numerous studies showing it helps. If you read the nizoral cream study it says the people either used the cream during shampooing or immediately after washing their hair. I'd imagine applying another topical after shampooing (especially a cream) would be quite messy and make hair look bad.

You can def give it a shot if you'd like, nizoral cream is pretty affordable and can be bought online.

Just my $.02

The cream triggered really sharp temporal headaches, plus if it goes systemic it damages your liver.

The liver is not effected as is bypassed when used tropically. As far as Nizoral shampoo, none of the Ketoconazole penetrates the skin so it's pretty much useless in treating androgenic alopecia.

Wtf? Why do you continuously spew this garbage? Nizoral is PROVEN to help. There are several studies showing it works in vivo and in vitro. Here I'll link some for you so you stop leading people in the wrong direction:

1%:

Reduces shedding and makes hair thicker:

2%:
About as effective as 2% minoxidil:

(nizoral + Propecia more effective than Propecia alone):

21 month study with graph (best results seen from months 6-15):

Small Japanese 2% cream study with before/after photos of two subjects:

Scientists shaved mice repeatedly and applied either ketoconazole or a vehicle solution to their skin and the mice who received ketoconazole repeatedly demonstrated "a macroscopically significant stimulatory effect". In other words their hair grew like crazy.

small scale study 2% keto more effective than 2% minoxidil:

Now let's see your studies that show "none of the ketoconazole penetrates the skin"

Hi,

I'm really unsure now. I've been using Nizoral for about a year now and I feel like it hasn't done a lot? I'm not sure though and It's so hard to tell if it's working or not...
