Alright guys... I'm a 28 year old black male and I just got back from my first hair transplant as a NW2/Temple/Vertex thinner. I have been losing my hair since 17 and have never been on meds. I've been debating whether to take the plunge for over a year now and finally did. Wanted to share my experience.
** The Proceedure **
Wow, what a breeze. Although the proceedure was about 8 hours total (DUE/400 grafts), it was virtually painless and easy going. I actually thought hair transplants were a painful process, but after getting numbed up (which didnt hurt at all, just a short series of needle injections), the doctor was able to go at it for hours while I was in complete comfort. The Doctor also gave me a zantax so after about a hour of taking it I slept through half the procedure and was away through the other half.
** Nuances of the proceedure **
Since I am black and opted for FUE, although the doctor had experience with black patients he had a hard time with me in particular but was eventually able to get the job done. I suppose thats why it took 8 hours total. So to any blacks looking for hair transplant, please choose a good experienced doctor.
** What I had done and what I thought of the results **
The only thing I had done is get my thin temples filled in which took up the entire 400 grafts. The only thing I have a issue with is that from what I can tell the temples are slightly uneven (my left temple was done more aggressive than my right). I asked the doctor to make sure my temples were too agressive and to make sure the outlined followed my natural hairline (I still have clearly visable baby hairs on my temple). I rate the pattern of my right temple 9/10 and my left temple maybe 8/10 for not matching my right. All in all decent but I may get this fixed at a later date to make them put match to the millimeter.
** Pain after proceedure **
Absolutely none other than minor pressure on my temples. Again, what is with all of these people being in pain afterwards? I guess we'll see how I feel in a few days.
** Is it worth it? **
This is my huge concern right now.... Even though the proceedure was a breeze and the results look decent enough (so far...), I'm really not sure if it was worth the money I dropped on it both today for the proceedure and the other misc costs... I'd recommend in total I spent $4000 in prep/gas/cost/etc. This is going to make me VERY poor for at least a month... maybe even a month in a half... so we'll see.
I'll keep you guys updated as time passes
** UPDATE **
This was posted yesterday on the hairlosshelp forums... No changes really, still no post op pain yet, but I am really starting to wonder if this was worth dropping 4 grand on... and also regretting how much down time I might have. My head is still swollen like a balloon and the scabs are still there in my temples. Not any worse than yesterday but not even better either. I am sitting at home knowing that I can't really leave my house for awhile nor see any of my family/friends... And of corse my hair lookts like sh*t cause the back of it is shaved and I can't shave the rest yet to at least even it out....
