After hours of reading forums, studies and articles on the internet and weighing up the effectiveness, side effects and cost of various products I've finally decided what regime I'm going to do; minoxidil foam, nizoral 1% and and Saw Palmetto (160 mg twice a day). I may possably add beta sistostrol. Has anyone done anything similar? Did it work and is there anything else I should know before I start? As far a I know there should be no problems using Saw Palmetto in conjunction with nizoral or minoxidil unless someone here can tell me otherwise. I'll just see how this goes for now. If I see any serious side effects or if I feel it isn't working after about a year I'll stop. I'm 36 now and about a Norwood 2. I may go for a transplant when I reach 40 but for now it's probably a bit early for that so this will have to do or now.

I was waiting for this response. No offence intended though guys, I know you're just trying to help. I'm aware I may be wasting my time without finasteride, I've read it a lot but unfortunately my a-hole of a doctor flatly refused to prescribe me some. In his words "we don't do that". I'm sure he's either a liar or he just doesn't know what he's taking about because lots of people on these forums seem to have got prescriptions for it. I'm wary of ordering it of the internet and to be honest I wouldn't be comfortable with the potential side effects of finasteride anyway.
So this is what I feel is the next best option for me. Saw Palmetto apparently works in similar way to finasteride although I'm aware that it's not 100% proven what studies have been done so far have produced very positive results. If nothing else the three products that I intend to use he minimal side effects so what have I got to lose (apart from my hair).

Go to a different derm. That's what i did when the first one wanted to wait 3 months before prescribing it.

If you ever change your mind about finasteride then go to pharmacy2u.co.uk, it is a UK verified online prescription service, as long as you state you're over 18 and have male pattern baldness they will prescribe you finasteride, it's the same place I got my dutasteride. The UK is full to the brim with incompetent dermatologists both private and public. Sorry but Saw Palmetto won't save you/probably won't help at all.

Just do your treatment for six months, if it does not work then get finasteride.

I've been on finasteride and minoxidil off and on both together and separately over the last 9 years or so. I'm sorry to say, but minoxidil and saw palmetto won't get you anything significant; as others have said, you need to get on finasteride at a minimum...period. minoxidil + finasteride is like 1+1=3. I've been on minoxidil+finasteride for about 5 years consistently now, and the results have been significant.

In order to avoid a prescription and the cost, I've been buying finasteride online for the last 5 years and it's totally legit. Don't let the fearmongers scare you from online pharms.

This is what I was thinking maybe 6 months to a year see how it goes then make a decision if I need finasteride or not.
