Dutasteride blocks two types of enzymes, and finasteride only one of them. Type 2 is the one which is responsible for hairloss, and they both take care of that, but dutasteride is more potent. Dutasteride is not approved as hairloss treatment, and you've only been 8 months on finasteride, so I would stick with that.

And by the way, if you decide to switch, I would use proscar for atleast 3 months first. 5 mg is a little more effective than 1 mg considering hairloss, but you have a greater chance of experiencing side effects. Even 5 mg a day can't compete with dutasteride. Just imagine the side effects, if you should get hit.

Most of the success stories on finasteride only (no minoxidil use) take around 12 month before any visible improvement are evident.

And the frustrating thing about it is, it might be working. Maybe if you weren't taking it you'd be losing a lot more hair.

Try the new Rogaine foam, as well. Finasteride and minoxidil act sinergistically.

I am curious to know how you judge your progress. How aggressive must your hair loss be for there to be visible changes in 8 months?

I am not being sarcastic or flippant but seriously balding is a slow progress.... 8 months isn't a very long time. How exactly do you determine that there had been no slowing or halting of your hair loss progression??

It's only been 8 months, give it some time.

I'm in the same situation as you but on the 10 month mark, so I know how you feel. You need to try to calm down.

Here's a success story for you which may help. You'll notice Douggie's worst months were 6-9.
