Itch continues after 11 months. Should I up proscar dosage?

I've been on proscar 1.25mg a day for 11 months. Been on rogaine foam 5% for 7 months and using nizoral 3x a week for 6 months.

During this entire time, my head has been very itchy and bothersome. I believe it's from the Nizoral so I use it less sparingly, but I also just think it's that "dreaded hair loss itch" that one has when they are suffering hair loss.

I been reading the forums and it seems there are correlations with taking finasteride, stopping the itch, and halting/regrowing hair loss.

Since the itching still exists, should I try upping the dose to 2.5mg....I don't suffer from sides and people have been successful doing this. Is there any truth to this "dreaded hair loss itch" I'm referring to? Or is it just side effects from finasteride, minoxidil, or nizoral? :dunno:

Don't take 2.5 all at once (at least not at first), do 1.25 in the morning and 1.25 at night. See if that helps.

My itch stopped at the 3 month mark, but exactly 1 month later at 4 months it returned for 3 days. Then it stopped. Then exactly another month later (this past weekend) it itched CRAZY. I took a little extra finasteride and a couple of advil and it went away for the most part.

I noticed this morning whenI woke up it wasn't itching, I immediately took my finasteride like I do every morning and hoping it won't itch anymore.

I strongly associate my itch with male pattern baldness, it only itches in areas I know my hair is thinning and I can usually have a thin hair fall out almost every time I scratch that area.

You could try upping the proscar doseage. Test it out for a little while and see how you do. If you have any side effects appear drop it down again.

I agree with Gray, yet my hair still itched when I took finasteride EOD. At the time I was thinking it might actually be the finasteride causing the itch so I stopped taking it for several months. The itch never stopped so I started taking it again however this time I cut out all sugar and processed flour and it made all the difference.

While a temporary flare up of itching can be quite normal during the start of nizoral treatment something as prolonged as 6 months is certainly not a sign that it's working. Don't change your dosage of proscar or minoxidil but you should consider outright abandoning your nizoral dosage and trying out miconazole or clotrimazole instead. In this exact same line of reasoning, as rogar mentioned, how is your sugars consumption?

Due to the relatively "flat" dose-response curve of finasteride, upping your daily dose from 1.25 mg to only 2.5 mg isn't much of a change! :) It would be a bit more significant if you upped it to (say) 5 mg or 10 mg every day.

I do think that your itchiness probably has more to do with the minoxidil or Nizoral that you're using.

Bryan, if a person was on TRT and administering 150mg weekly Testosterone Enanthate, do you think the requirements for finasteride would be higher than normal? Is there a limited amount of 5AR enzyme, or would there tend to be more produced if T levels were higher than normal? Thanks...

Sorry off topic, but it relates to the "increasing finasteride dosage" idea of post. Thanks.

I didn't get the chance to experiment much with this, but I've been on TRT for several months now. I overdosed to begin with, not on purpose, but because of wrong assumption regarding dosage. Anyway, I used 2.5 mg finasteride for a period, and it relieved the itching I had when the testosterone level continued to raise at supraphysiological level. Since 100 mg Telogen Effluvium a week is considered a full replacement dose, I suggest 1 mg finasteride per 100 mg Telogen Effluvium/C.

my 2c,

- You could look into the Glycimic index diet. Helped me a great deal with inflammation.

-maybe rotate a Piroctione Olamine shampoo and a Tea tree oil shampoo. These have anti androgenic - anti inflammatory properties that can help with the scalp inflammation/itch.
