Is this male pattern balding?

I am 21 years old and until recently I have always had a thick head of hair- almost John Kerry-like. Now my hair still looks somewhat thick, but upon closer inspection in the light you can see places in the scalp in the front that show through. If I take a mirror to the top of my head I can see in the front that it's thinner than in the back. I was also born with a naturally high forehead and a widow's peak. I just don't understand where this hair is going. I don't find any in the shower, on the floor of my bathroom, or on my bed. I run my hands through my hair and very little hair comes out. Can anyone help me as to what this is and if any treatment is necessary?? Thanks. I'm starting to worry. I'm just beginning in the broadcast journalism field.

a shed isnt a necessary part of male pattern baldness. A person typically loses 50-100 hairs naturally a day and that doesnt mean they're balding. Still, some people's follicles replace the hair more slowly, and that means that even losing 50-100 hairs could make the hair look thinner. so shedding or not shedding isn't the deciding factor in determing male pattern baldness.

Still, its possible you aren't going through male pattern baldness. I would recommend seeing a derm, and trying to get a diagnosis from him. Its possible that you're going through something called Telogen Effluvium, or Telogen Effluvium. Hopefully thats all you're going through, since the hair would certainly grow back.

But if you're really worried about it, you might as well get on finasteride now, so that if it is male pattern baldness, you'll already be into treatment.

yeah im pretty much the same as you from what you described, most of the time you wont notice your hair falling out, it's happening all day to everyone. Just because you can see your head through your hair doesnt mean your going bald.

As silkeysmooth has mentioned, i recomend you go to a doctor and get a refferal to a dermatologist, they are qualified doctors(you need 11 years of study to be a derm) if possible see two different dermatologists and compare what they say to be sure.
sit down and explain to the what you know(best to make a list) and ask as many questions as possible. Ask them if you have male pattern baldness and what can be done about it. The best thing to do is to get educated on the matter get expert advice and take action. Then longer you leave male pattern baldness, if that is indeed what you have the worse off you may be(if you care about it that is)

P.S DO NOT GO TO ADVANCED HAIR OR ANY OF THEM TYPE PLACES THEY ARE THERE TO MAKE MONEY AND NOTHING ELSE. TALK TO DOCTORS AND DERMATOLOGIST"S THEY ARE THE WORLD EXPERTS ON THE MATTER!
ALSO A TRICHOLOGIST IS NOT A DOCTOR THEY ARE BULLSHIT AND DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME ON THEM!

upon further examination

It just might be Telogen Effluvium. I read the symptoms for that, and I did go through a period of high stress. I was going to college, working a part time job that I hated, and I was severely stressed over relationship woes. I also see lots of little hairs on my scalp. I think I will wait a month or two, and if I don't see any improvement, then I will definitely see a dermatologist. At least I am young and can stop this thing before it gets too bad if it is indeed male pattern baldness.
