I think it's debatable. Correct me if I am wrong because not all male balding pattern comes with the typical horseshoe or M shape. Some like myself started having a receding hairline without the M shape, the forehead just became higher and exposed temple become wider. So I would feel that there is no harm starting hair growth treatments early if you feel you are experiencing balding. I first noticed crown thining and receding hairline after my friends commented, despite an assurance from my dermatologist there was no signs of balding (he was wrong because after starting on minoxdil, my crown area got filled up again). But only yourself will know better whether the hairline you have now is the same as that years before or receded. Of course, I am not saying to use finasteride or those aggressive anti androgen treatments.
