Is the Sun good or bad for hair loss?

Is general mild Sun good or bad for hair? (not the strong summer midday sun which everyone knows is bad coz it can cause sunburn or even cancer).

It gives vitamin D and K which are good things. But I have heard people saying Sun exposure is not good if you are balding?

I am asking because I like to be in the Sun but if it is bad I will avoid sunlight, even pleasant spring morning Sun for example.

What about when using Retin-A. Even mild sun exposure causes UV reaction and the scalp flakes. Is that harmless or does that cause hair loss, especially on the tiny ones you are trying to grow with treatments?

male pattern baldness is genetic and has nothing to do with how much you are out in the sun. There is no evidence that this or other environmental factors such as stress, depression, obesity, unhealthy diet, or lack of exercise have anything to do with male pattern baldness.

If there is such a thing as some form of hair loss that can be caused by too much sun exposure, it would be something that is unrelated to male pattern baldness, and I'd imagine that such hair loss would most likely be temporary in nature.

Thanks. What about the thin wispy hair on way to regrowth cycles with treatment? Could Sun have an adverse effect on them?

I am convinced that moderate to strong sun directly on your scalp is bad for hair growth. Sunburn (even mild) causes scarring and inflammation in the skin tissue. If your prone to male pattern baldness and you add additional scarring and inflammation, you damage the follicles. Morning sun might actually be good for the skin condition.

I base this on the fact that some years ago I didn't care, went in the sun on hot days and got sunburn very regularly om my crown area. Even a half hour in the sun would cause sunburn. This clearly accelerated the balding and shedding om my crown. Since some years I wear hats and shedding during the summer had significantly reduced. When I look at the crow scalp through pictures I can clearly see the damage/scarring, just as on do my shoulders. I think that regrowth is not possible on the parts that have been severely sunburned.

The thing about sun on your scalp is that the only way to prevent sunburn is to wear a hat. I tried putting on sun screen creams and lotions but it becomes a mess. If anybody has any suggestions I sure would like to hear them.

The general consensus seems to be that Sun is bad for hair but how do you explain these?

1) Swisstemples advocates sunburn in his protocol at http://swisstemples.com/what-to-buy-and-use/

Sunburns:UVB lamps: Topical:5 minutes once a week increases endogenous PGE2 enormously, best used together with sulfasalazine as they are synergistical to each other

2) Sun produces Vit D and K, both essential for many things including hair

3) There was this famous story of this bald guy who grew all his hair after sufferring a terrible burn (although not sunburn) to his scalp

doesn't matter. it will lighten your hair in the summer, and darken it in the winter.

Wear sunscreen though... **** ages you.

Doesn't matter, however there was some evidence that a very intense sunburn on your scalp may actually stimulate some reversal of hair loss during the healing process.

The sun cannot be bad for hair loss, or otherwise the population living in hot sunny areas would probably have some seriously diffused thinning! :sun:

Its the UV that's relevant. I am from India now settled in the UK. In India (Delhi) we get temperatures upwards of 40 celcius and overhead Sun like a furnace and noone wears sunscreen and hardly anyone ever gets sunburn. In the UK, we will get sunburn without sunscreen often. Strange as it may sound but its because the atmosphere is much more thicker in India than here in the UK which is closer to the poles, and this thicker atmosphere filters out the harmful UV. The clouds in UK appear to be so low everyone visiting from India gets amazed looking at them.
Caucasians suffer more from male pattern baldness than say, Indians or Chinese. And they get more sunburn. There is some correlation.

Sun is bad for hair, Africans have terrible hair! It turns it dry, damaged, and wiry. Surfers all have damaged hair.
