Is proscar the same thing as finasteride?

I'm pretty sure proscar is simply a pill with a 5mg does of finasteride. Is the generic form of proscar reliable?

I'm trying to find a cheaper method to get finasteride because right now I'm paying $57 a month in Canada. Would proscar have the same positive effects as finasteride?

Yes, proscar is finasteride. Just cut each pill into 4 or 5 pieces.

Any idea why it's cheaper? I have this weird idea in my mind that cheaper = lower quality, but I'm still going to try it.

Cheaper because it doesn't have a brand name attached to it. That's really all that there is.
