Is My Hairline Receding Or Maturing?

I’m a 21 year old male, over the last six months or so my hairline has got slightly thinner especially around the right corner. I heavily suspect that this is maturing into the same shape as my father’s is and his great-grandfathers as I’m in a line of about five or six generations that look fairly similar. Baby photos of all of us look the same for example. However both my brother and maternal grandfather started balding around 19/20 and we’re obviously balding by my age, which I’m not, so it’s obviously runs in the family. I thought I’d just double check though.

The first three photos are of my hair pulled back in varying statesmen of length over the last three months. The fourth is my hair down in January 2018, the fifth is in May 2015. The 6th and 7th are my hair aged 13. The 8th, 9th and 10th are my brother and maternal grandfather at my age, their hairlines had both receded to about an inch further than mine. The last 3 are whom I’m told I take after, the last being my father in his 20s, the 11th and 12th his great grandfather. Interestingly my dad claims to had the same thin patch as me on the right side at my age, my thin patch follows roughly the shape of lines I’ve always had on my head and behind is the same shape of his hairline in the later photos. Does my hairline show signs of maturing or balding is in effect my question? I’ve tried to provide as much information as possible.

Hello, your hair is very thick so I doubt you're balding. You're most likely a NW1. It might be maturing for now and might stop, but it's unsure.. If I were you, I'd take photos every month or so just to see if anything happens, and recess at that point. It might be too early for treatments.

You could always check with a hair transplant specialist or a dermatologist for a definitive answer since most of them have the ability to check your hair for miniaturization.

Mature hairlines are like Santa Claus. Nice idea but doesn’t exist in real life.

It’s just a polite way of saying slight male pattern baldness.

I would hop on finasteride male pattern baldness is like a snowball rolling down hill. Once it starts the problem only gets bigger and more difficult to stop

Thing is in my family the mature hairline is definitely a thing, my father and my uncles, and my paternal grandfather, and my paternal grandmothers grandfather all had a degree of recession in their twenties and then no more after. On the other side however my maternal grandfather went bald very young and my older brother is quite evidently going that way too. But both had started balding by my age and both had brown curly hair whereas I have straight black hair like my dad’s side of the family

The process has started but it doesnt mean you will go bald. You can either start finasteride just in case or you can wait it out. Thing is, a lot of people in ur position end up waiting it out and all of a sudden they are NW3 and wish that they started medication when they were NW1.5 like you. Also, having brothers who balded young is not a good sign at all.
