Is My Hair Thinning Out Or Is It Something Else...

Hi everyone,
21 years old. A month or two back I had my hair cut down substantially (compared to what it was anyways). Recently, however, I noticed that my crown seems to either be thinning, or has an odd cowlick that I never seemed to notice, or was cut weirdly, or SOMETHING. I have been told several times by several different hairdressers and such that my hair is very healthy and thick so this is sort of coming as a shock and a potential concern for me.

I have attached photos of my hair before and after the cut, as well as the crown in question. I threw my hairline in there for good measure, just to see if that provides any further insight.

Also sorry if this makes a bunch of people angry or something, hahah....

Hmm, that does look a little strange indeed. Longer hair covers the scalp better of course so it's hard to tell. Your hairline doesn't seem to be receding. Maybe take a close-up picture with your hair back. For your crown area, I would say maybe. It could just as well be that your crown just looks that way. Keep an eye on it, if it gets worse you know what's up.

I took a close up pic of the hairline, not sure if it's clear enough for you to get a better look.

Also yeah, I'm really a little confused about the crown - I haven't had my hair shorter like this in about a year or two and I don't have any pics of my crown from before now so I'm totally in the dark. Either way, I'll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled.

Your hairline seems fine. It's a good thing you're keeping an eye on it! If it seems to get worse you should consider Finasteride and/or Minoxidil. Bur for now, don't worry.

Do you think the crown is anything to worry about? It just seems super odd looking to me, but I'm really not sure. I've been super paranoid about it lately so I'm wondering if I should have it looked at just because it looks sorta weird? But maybe that's going too far. Either way, thank you for the helpful words about the hairline, I really appreciate that.

you definitely have the balding gene. Not to say you are truly balding, or will ever go bald, but your temples are norwood 2 likely indicating some kind of hairloss at some point in time. Don't stress, virtually all white guys have the balding gene and it either expresses itself in slow degradation of the frontal portion or something more severe. The pictures you provided are pretty bad tbh, we need some better lighting with a better quality camera and a more ideal angle for the crown. Your hair overall looks great though IMO however you should keep an eye on it.

Yeah, I wasn't entirely sure if the images were all that clear...I just took a few more under a few different lights and (hopefully) better quality so maybe they'll be easier to look at now? If not then I'll have to find a better camera to take these pictures with tomorrow or something. Hopefully they'll look a little better.

If you think your hair is thinning, if it feels thinner than before, then it probably is. Hair loss often isn't noticeable until you lose 50% of your original density, it's like a tipping point past which hair loss becomes visible.

Would now be a good time to go see a dermatologist then? I'd really like to try and do something about this if I can.
Yeah, or a hair loss specialist ideally. Early intervention is everything in hair loss, this is still early.

much better pics, cheers. To be honest your hair looks fine to me in all of those pictures although of course those bits of scalp could always be the very early beginnings of male pattern baldness, thats what sucks about it, you don't truly know until you know. There is a seriously fine line between discernible thinning and a normal looking crown in pictures like this. In my opinion there is nothing there to worry about however thats not to say that there definitely isn't. I can only speak from my experience but I too have a cowlick that seems to extend upwards a bit from the back of the head. When I first realised I had a receding hairline (almost a decade ago) I naturally began to stress about my hair all over my head. For about a year I was obsessing over the crown seeing things that were not there. I ended up shaving my head a few times and realised in the process I had zero crown loss because it was much easier to examine the quality of hair around the crown area in comparison to other areas of my head.

I think this is a good place to start if you think you might be thinning on the crown even though you would have to sacrifice your glorious locks. Just don't stress, you got so much hair and you are right where you should be in terms of combating hair-loss should you ever need to.

i mean the NW2 headed to NW3 temples at 21 should be a giveaway he has male pattern baldness
