Is my crown thinning? Pics included

Hello there all,

I am 22 years old and will be turning 23 soon. I would say since around 20 I have been overly concerned with the thought or realization that I am in fact going to go bald or am starting to recede.

I have no doubt noticed a difference over the years but as I have read it's quite normal for your hairline to change. However my family history isn't really on my side, genetically. My dad's side is very poor when it comes to hair loss. My dad is bad and has lost almost all of his hair and he's 58 years old. He began to recede around... I would say 30-35 years old. His two brothers and dad also went through this but the youngest one, my uncle, is in his 40's and still has a solid set of hair.

My mom's side is slightly better. My uncle is in his 50's and his hair has receded, mostly on the crown but it's still pretty good and his dad had decent to okay hair in his 60's.

My cousins seem to be okay too, on my mom's side and they are in their mid 20's.

Anyways, I've tried my best to not stress but it's always been an issue for me. I haven't gone on anything as of yet. I tried getting a referral to see a dermatologist from my doctor and she has refused to send me because she thinks I am over reacting, but it's something I truly don't think I am making up here.

Anyways any tips or insight would be appreciated. I know some people may mock what I have compared to it being more serious in other people's cases but any kind info or comments are appreciated.

Here is a pic of my crown which I feel looks thin. I maintain a very healthy lifestyle, take omega and flax pills, excersise regularly and all that which they say helps.

Here's a pic. IMG_0117.jpgPhoto on 2015-02-15 at 9.10 PM.jpg

My temples have only slightly receded. I forgot to mention I have been using Nioxin shampoo... don't know if that will help me at all but my hair has always been thick, it's made it thicker it seems after I use it. I only wash my hair around twice a week since they say that's better.

Please comment!

hairline is solid man, although looks like one side is a bit higher..don't think that's unsual though, mine is like that too. that's very slight thinning on the crown, but I wouldn't say you need finasteride, at least not yet. definitely try minoxidil first.

Cool thanks for the replies.

Yeah I mean I was hoping to get prescribed finasteride by my doctor or at least sent to someone who would but nothing as of yet. I likely will speak with her again.

Yeah my hairline is okay. I've always wanted to try finasteride to at least stop or slow down the hairloss now because I don't want it to get worse but yeah one side is slightly higher... never knew why lol it's not a huge difference but yeah.

I'll try something.

Those ****ers that say it's all good only noticed their male pattern baldness when they got to NW3. Yes OP, your crown is thinning.

Well I've tried comparing it to other pictures on the internet and most seem to think it's alright. I obviously am concerned or else I wouldn't have asked.
But based on the comments here it seems as if most think my crown is thinning. I'll have to see my Doctor and hopefully continue on from there in hoping she helps me this time instead of saying everything is fine.

I obviously don't want to wait until it's too late.

Personally I think you're okay. You can take photos of people with absolutely zero male pattern baldness and make it look like they have thinning at the crown (lighting, parting of the crown etc).

I would document photos in the same conditions every month to see if there is any changes and then if you notice anything you know its male pattern baldness and you have the evidence. Good luck

Thanks appreciate it.

Yeah I definitely keep a close eye on it. This pic was taken in the light also I hadn't washed my hair in 2 days so my hair was a bit oilier. Sounds gross but I've heard its better.

I'll keep monitoring. My hair has changed IMO but it's still thick and I usually don't let it grow too long. I'll likely try and get a doctor referral regardless because I really would like to get a hair density test or something done by a derm, and if in fact they say I am okay for now it'll boost my confidence and make me feel better.

I personally think it looks like a cowlick. If your still worried monitor over the next year with pictures.

You say your genes are not on your side might want to start thinking about starting up finasteride in the future.

Doesn't look like your thinning to me.. keep an eye out of course, it looks like you have some nice thick hair though.

Your crown is probably thinner than when you were a kid, but doesn't necessarily mean you are on your way to getting a bald spot there.

Forgot to mention I do have a cowlick yeah my hair is very similar to my moms but still with my dad's side being poor I will continue to monitor.
And yes I mean realistically I don't anticipate on having a full set of hair forever with all things considered so I know when the time comes whether it be soon or down the road I will likely start finasteride.

Oh I keep an eye out trust me haha it's been a while since I have been constantly monitoring it. My hair is thick yes but I mean maybe it's because I look at it every day I notice changes and some miniaturization.

it's different for sure I just have been keeping an eye out to see if it gets worse and so far it's definitely different than before but nothing too drastic I suppose.

It's not thinning, you can see the scalp at the crown on men with even the thickest of hair.

Think so? I did take it in heavy lighting.
Thanks, I'll keep monitoring regardless.

Thanks for all the reposes by the way been great help.

One more question I would have is, when is the right time to start finasteride and from experience, does it actually work?

I may not be there yet but down the road I obviously would want to try it... I've heard some horror stories like it slows down your sex drive considerably, erectile problems, constant headaches etc.

I mean I obviously wouldn't want any of that haha so I was just curious. At the end of the day though I would want to maintain my hair more than losing a bit of sex drive to be honest. When is it the right time to say "Okay, I definitely am far along with my male pattern baldness, I need finasteride."

Norwood 2? 3?

Thanks.

Still in my early phase of finasteride usage so not a lot of experience but, from what I've read and seen and what my derm told me it works for the a lot of people. Thats probably why we don't see as many bald heads today. Don't worry about the horror stories most of the people who experience side report them going away or stopping completely after discontinuing the finasteride. Watery jizz and low libido I think are the most common. I'm experiencing the watery jizz as of now, but it really doesn't bother me.

Basically you want to start it before you even show any signs of male pattern baldness lol.

Yeah I mean thats good to know. I have always wanted to start it... more so to stop any further balding down the road because I am only 23 so... I don't want to rapidly start losing hair and then look back and wish I started sooner.

The problem is my doctor won't prescribe me anything unless she agrees I need it and so far she's refused to send me anywhere or prescribe me anything or else I probably would have started finasteride haha.

Does finasteride regrow hair?? Or does it simply stop the person from losing anymore?

Also is it true if you stop taking finasteride you automatically can start losing hair again? Like if I start it, I pretty much have to take it for the rest of my life haha?
