Since minoxidil has less side effects i would start with minoxidil.
If you want to do finasteride you should think about using both

Don't go minoxidil first, ever.
Fina is safest and more effective route to hair loss stabilisation and opens a route for regrowth

Don't listen to the above poster who suggested you try minoxidil first without finasteride. That is poor advice.

Finasteride and its stronger alternative dutasteride are the best weapons we currently have available to treat hair loss, and it is absolutely necessary to use one of these if you want to give yourself a realistic chance of winning the long-term battle against male pattern baldness.

You have not gone past the point of no return. You still have a lot of hair left, and finasteride (or dutasteride) can be expected to halt any further loss with a good chance of some regrowth.

If I was in your shoes, I would get on finasteride as soon as you can. I would also recommend you use minoxidil in addition to finasteride, but definitely do not use minoxidil without also using finasteride.

Get on it now and reevaluate in 6 months to a year. You can throw in minoxidil at some point too...up to you if you want to start that now too.

Anyway, you still have hair and you are 21, so you have youth on your side...really, just start now and you'll be alright.

Will any doctor prescribe it for me?

Go to a dermatologist...most should be willing to prescribe it. Anyway, I was in your position at 21...was on it, stopped for no real reason. Now I'm 25 and in worse shape, about to hop back on. My advice to you would be to get on it and stay on it. I mean, unless you find you can't tolerate it or something. But yeah.

Popping a pill each day for peace of mind about your hair is a no-brainer.

You're not going VERY bald. You are perfect for getting on all treatments (finasteride, minoxidil, nizoral) and you have good coverage and if you can keep what you have and gain, you will be so happy in life..........................................................................................................
