Is it normal to lose some hair when starting propecia??

I only started taking it 2 weeks ago, but I have noticed hairs falling out onto my face just during the day, quite long ones. This wasn't happening previously, infact no hair was coming out even when I was washing my hair, although I have lost alot over the last 3/4 years and my hair is really thin now. :(

I was wondering if this happens to others?

Well, I started 12 days ago/1.25 a day. I still lose hair when when showering and I see hair on my pillow when waking up. I've read this is normal and I'm not too concerned about it.

Here's a quote from a poster I read in another forum

Your apprehension is normal. Shedding with Propecia (Finasteride), though it happens, is something we'd all like to avoid if possible. I suspect that you're correct, you've started a bit of a shed.

You may or may not know that "shedding", as is often referred to from Propecia use, is merely many hairs going into the telogen or "resting" phase all at the same time. All hair goes into the telogen phase, it's just that normally only 10% or so is in this phase at one time. During a Propecia shed........you may have more like 20%-30% of your hair that has been kicked into the telogen phase from starting on Propecia so you haven't "lost" the hair, it's just away on vacation and will come back soon! Make sense?? The Telogen phase lasts around 6 weeks then the hair starts coming back.........hopefully stronger and thicker..less inhibited by the DHT, right??

As for regrowth, if you experience any, it's impossible to predict. I've now been on Propecia (actually Proscar quartered) for almost 1 year and have noticed slight regrowth in the hairline, no doubt about it. I think it started around 6 months if I remember correctly. It's really not that cosmetically significant though it does soften my hairline somewhat. If I were you, I'd really commit to 1 year before reconvening the jury for the decision!! And, the best way to judge your progress is by documenting with pictures which i highly recommend you do if you haven't already........on a monthly basis from the same angles.

I've been on 1.25MG finasteride for a month now, and haven't noticed a thing except for decrease in scalp itch.

I have never seen any evidence that taking finasteride shifts your hair folicles to the Telogen phase, and I don't see how it could possibly cause this. All it is doing is reducing the amount of DHT in your blood, which reduces the amount that attaches to your hair folicles. This results in healthier folicles that no longer shrink, and that now produce thicker hair. Potentially, you may also be able to 're-activate' folicles that have stopped producing hair, though this effect usually only occurs when the hair loss is recent (less than 3 years). That's why most people who have had hair line recession for quite a while aren't unable to grow it back.

So in conclusion, I doubt you are experiencing increased shedding, and just noticing it more because hair loss is on your mind lately. Definitely keep an eye on it, but make sure you maintain a realistic view on things; you will lose hundreds of hairs every day, even if you are a NW1.

I definitely lose more hair during the first month or so on Finasteride, going from losing about 10 in the shower to about 30-40. Nothing else changes apart from taking finasteride, so I gather it is the finasteride making me "shed" temporarily. (This is during a shower after waking up at 7:30AM.)

It then goes back to baseline after a month and a half (approx), then after a few months I lose slightly less than 10 in the shower. This isn't an exact hair count or anything (I don't count them exactly each morning) but it is hard not to notice there is a difference in the mornings.
