Is it normal or possible to start balding without the male pattern baldness gene?

Is significant hair loss within 2-3 months considered normal or is this sudden?

I'm 19 experiencing some hair loss and my dad's hairline may be receding slightly but it looks the same as it did in pictures at 14 or 15. He's 48 years old.

I haven't been able to get any feedback.

I personally feel like this is an issue other than male pattern baldness. I am in no way in denial, I look good with very short hair, and I believe I would look good bald. I would just like to know what's going on. I had thick hair as recent as Christmas, and my drivers license photo (taken may of last year), shows a very poofy thick head of hair. Now my hair is thinning in odd places, and the top of my scalp is very tender.

When I run my fingers through my hair I never see any visible hairs, but my scalp gets sore very quickly. I also have thin spot or two on the sides.

I went through a period of about 4 months with terrible dandruff last year, and I scratched my scalp to the point of redness very often, scabs would appear and I would pull them off. The thinning is happening in those very areas. I've been very gentle with my hair lately and I've gotten rid of the dandruff, but my scalp is still tender on top, and on the sides. This makes me think that it is a case of traction alopecia, as my hair is only thin in spots that I scratched vigorously, even on the sides, namely the left side.

dude i hate to break it to you but thats classic male pattern baldness ur getting there. Your losing your hair a bit like wayne rooney. The tender scalp is part of it all and quite normal. nizoral should help. I would get on the big three as soon as possible...thats finasteride(propecia), minoxidil(rogaine) and nizoral.

Baldness can come from your mothers side..

Oh yeah....traction alopecia is when someone has their hair tied back very tightly e.g braids. It has nothing to do with scratching.

in regards to your question 'Is it normal to bald without the male pattern baldness gene?'

You can get it from either your mother or your father. Your mother may pass it from her father etc. If your dad's hair is ok im guessing one of your grandfathers was/is bald.

You are either in denial or just dont not have much knowledge of hair loss. Its clear from your pictures your hair is miniaturising as the front and top is getting lighter than the sides. Basically the hairs are getting smaller and thinner until one day they dont grow. With treatment you may be able to hold back the years. do some research. sooner the better. At 19 your hair loss is quite advanced.

I am not in denial at all, but you are wrong about traction alopecia. It is usually caused by braids or tight hair styles but can be caused by scratching, look it up, it really can.

I know that it can come from your mother's side. I didn't mention her parents and grandparents because they died with really full heads of hair. I guess my grandpa on my mother's side could have had the gene? He died at 61 with a full head of hair and no receding at all, but I guess it could have affected him if he lived longer? I'm 100% sure of this or I wouldn't be posting it on a hair loss forum. If I had a history of male pattern baldness then I would obviously know what it is.

I'm not ruling out male pattern baldness at all, I just don't know if you can get it without a history of it. Can you?

If this is male pattern baldness (I'm not saying at all that it isn't), then I'll probably look like wayne rooney because it does seem to be taking that route. I have read that your scalp is NOT supposed to be sore when losing hair, though.

I'm going to look for some pictures from christmas and before to show you what I mean. I had absolutely no signs of hair loss by christmas, I just thought that male pattern baldness was a little more gradual because it got this thin very fast. I've also read that stress can speed up the male pattern baldness process, do you think I have the male pattern baldness gene and it's been sped up by stress?

I don't like how you automatically assume that I am in denial or that I don't know anything about hair loss because I'm not sure what the cause is. I know it LOOKS like male pattern baldness.. but the only person in my family with male pattern baldness is an uncle by marriage. I also don't understand the patches on the side of my head and stuff.

Thank you very much for the VERY quick responses!

he says he has no baldness from any side of the family. Theres some somewhere because its male pattern baldness.

i dont know why you took offense to me saying ur balding man. Its as clear as day. Its a very typical pattern which shows its nothing to do with thyroid issues or illness etc. Sooner you admit your fate the better. Saying your not balding is like saying the sky is green.

good luck

If you're looking for a diagnoisis post some pics. But the m.p.b gene could come from a few generations back.

My dad didn't suffer from male pattern baldness; he didn't start going bald until his late thirties. However, me and my brother are balding and we're in our early twenties. Your dad's hairline doesn't matter. The gene could come from anywhere, maybe your mother's side.

I have my dad's exact hairline, color, and wavy type of hair. He's almost 50 and still has all of it while I starting thinning at around 19.
