Is it common for propecia to accelerate normal male pattern baldness?

It seems like so many people on this forum are saying they've experienced massive sheds/thinning/loss of hairline etc etc on propecia.. Is this to say that propecia caused this or is it just thier male pattern baldness? I thought propecia was supposed to save you hair

Im asking as i have just started propecia 0.5mg/day and concerned about the results. My hair loss is very mild and only receeding at the sides so im wondering if im doing the wrong thing starting propecia.. help?

I certainly feel that propecia accelerated my mild hairloss greatly. I feel it could be due to the Test spike. Trust me if things had improved I wouldn't be lurking in these forums any more. My hair density is down about 40 percent in my hairline and crown with 0 progress overall. I still shed more than I did during baseline. I still use minoxidil and spironolactone as I did before so I can be sure that finasteride was the only addition to my routine.

Keep in mind that I am only 1 person. There are others who swear by finasteride. My advice would be to try 0.5 mg for about 6 months to see what happens. If it's working then you should notice shedding going down and possibly new hair growth.

There is something called Reflex Hyperandogenicity (hope I remembered that correctly) I think a few of us may suffer this or certainly something that causes finasteride/propecia to work in a negative way on our hair.

A shed is one thing but when there is continual loss of hair with no replacement hair behind it then there is something wrong. Certainly all the hair that I lose on a daily basis is not being replaced..I don't know why.

I'm taking all the good stuff so its all disappointing. There are many good responders though so its your decision whether you decide to go for it ...depends how much you have lost and over what period Hope you will be one of the good responders which are the majority according Propecia's web site. I always thought at worst I would move not far behind baseline but 6 months on I never thought I would have lost the huge amount of hair I have. I'm moving over to dutasteride to see if that can do it.

why dont you show us pics to prove it...

to be honest...ive never seen any pics from the people that claim that finasteride made them LOSE more hair....kinda odd that no one had pics to prove this.

Even if someone did post pics, I have seen people time and time again on this forum argue "you are a non-responder, your loss would have happened anyway, etc etc."

It would be difficult, if not impossible, to prove something like accelerated loss by pics alone.

Thanks for your answers, they're much appreciated.
I guess i was worried because no one was reporting anything good about the product.
But i would think that the people who respond well wouldnt spend their time on this forum.
Im really cant decide now if propecia is worth taking. At the first sign of loss i think im going to drop it

I agree with this completely, all the users with broken English on this site who say things like: 'finasteride no work for me,' never post pictures.

People post pictures of success in the main as they are happy to show success.

Nothing more depressing posting pictures of failure and loss of hair..I don't even like looking in the mirror any more as my hairline has gone in 6 months..last thing I want is a picture on here to remind me of how much I lost..same as for the rest who have not suceeded stopping loss yet.

Vipergts made that staement about his hairloss and I totally believe him, he does not need to prove it in a photo as I have lost the same.

Us non responders continually look for inspiration from those that suceed in getting meds to work so please keep helping and not doubt us that are not having a good time on meds.

elemenopee123 - If you start you have to keep meds up forever so do remember that and keep the faith.

I have no intentions of posting my pics till I actually get back to baseline. Trust me, I have nothing against finasteride. I had very realistic expectations and was simply expecting to maintain what I had. Like Nick said even if I post my pics I will get the typical "you are simply a poor responder" thrown at me. If you don't want to believe me, then don't. It is my belief that Propecia really accelerated the hairloss process for me, whether you choose to believe me or not doesn't really concern me. I want to point out that I am not giving up on finasteride just yet. I really have nothing to lose since my only option now is to shave my head. So I am going to wait 6 more months so I can hit the 1 year mark. If things don't turn around I will stop using finasteride.

And again, I will reiterate it is very hard to

1) Prove loss of density in a pic if you are a NW2 or similar. I myself started with thick hair and started finasteride to stop my temple and hairline recession. I was fine everywhere else. But I feel I have lost density and body in my wavy hair. But a picture would simply not reflect that after 2 months, even though *I* can see it, feel it, and see the shed hair everywhere. For things like density and thickness, pictures are too one-dimensional to notice the kind of subtle, but very real, changes that occur early on in finasteride. Maybe if finasteride was causing it over a year, or everyone wore their hair in a buzzcut, you could notice. But for people like me who keep it long, a picture won't help anyone gauge something like overall thickness in that kind of time span.

2) Prove acceleration when so many posters have there "you are a non-responder" or "ride it out" or "maybe your male pattern baldness just got more aggressive" at ready

I don't get these forums sometimes. People say "Hair loss is different for everyone" in one breath and and in another say things like "Prove it to me with pictures" in another. Do you really think people he or anyone else is lying about this?

no, all im saying is ive never seen pics of propecia ACCELERATING hair loss...

Im not saying everyone responds positively to it...although most do.

but for it to accelerate your hair loss...thats hard to believe...people have claimed it...but NO ONE has shown pics of it.

I'm 2 months in, here's hoping I don't become your case study. I feel like my loss has continued and at a faster pace because of some initial hard shedding.

Not surprisingly, I really hope I'm not the one to finally prove it to you...

JDW posted some pictures after spending a while complaining about the massive hairloss he had.

I agree with Nick, its embarrassing to post pics of your hairline going backwards.

I second this. I used finasteride for 50 das and my hairlie got destroyed. Shedding was diffuse and my pillow was always full of hairs.
I did take pics, but why would I ever share something depressing? People boast about success, not failures.
