Is It A Good Sign That Many finasteride Users Never Re-visit?

I noticed by reading a lot of old posts and threads that many users that were on finasteride never came back. It seems like they stop visiting this site a few months (sometimes less) after that. Is it because they had success and were able to stop worrying about their hair? I think it’s a good sign, most of the people on here are either just started meds, want to start, or aren’t starting. I don’t see many users that have been on finasteride for years, and it seems like it’s because the majority of those people stop worrying about their hair once they see that the shedding/thinning/balding has halted, so they forget about this site. I did the same thing with a dentistry website- I joined and posted for a few weeks, then when I got my wisdom teeth taken out, I posted how it went and never came back. I’m guessing it’s the same for those members. Thoughts?

I think you may have a point. I became a zombie to this forum when I stated losing my hair, checking it everytime I got a spare minute, when I woke up in the morning, etc. Then, started finasteride, took it for the last year and just kinda chilled out about things. However, I have recently stopped taking finasteride and guess what? The zombie has returned!!

Real question is why did you stop finasteride ?

Just never got comfortable taking it to be honest pal. I may have been having some side effects too, but mainly it was the mental side of things getting to me. I've been off it now for over a month but I can't deal with the inevitable, I thought I could, but I can't. I'm seriously thinking about starting up again... I'm gonna post a new thread asking about restarting finasteride after a break. Do you know anything about that?

Nah I've been on finasteride for years and stopped going on the forum as much, but finasteride has done nothing to slow my hair loss down and honestly things have accelerated over the years since starting. I just don't come back because this forum offers me nothing now. I know everything I need to know about treatments and it seems like there isn't anything new coming out anytime soon. I will check back every few weeks in the research and developments section, but really no point of being on here anymore. I think most people who stop coming back here realize that this forum doesn't really offer much or anything to help them. Is more of just a coping site and not everyone needs that. Some people just want their hair loss fixed and don't really need to vent their issues about it online, and this is more of a place for the second thing. Its a good site for basic information on treatments, but once you are fairly knowledgeable about treatments, this site is really useless.

15 months on finasteride and I went from nw2.5-nw3-4. It's a week I'm off now and realized how much slower and less witty it made me mentally, aside from that no sides. I'd honestly get back on if it worked but at this point I was just getting sides for nothing... I've also been on the forum a lot less this past week so I'm sure continued success isn't the SOLE reason why people disappear from here

Have you tried dutasteride since it’s supposed to work better than finasteride?

I started on finasteride about 10 years ago when I noticed signs of receding at the temples and at the crown. I did not get any side-effects from taking it and can say that it stopped my hairloss in its tracks (even re-grew some at the crown).

Luckily I have an easy way to tell if it is working for me - I have a twin who does not take finasteride.
He has MUCH more hairloss than me now.

To answer the OP, I am one of people who visited a LOT when I first started balding but once I saw the finasteride was working I would stop visiting the site. My last visit was probably 2+ years ago.

I'm one of them. I don't visit this forum every day anymore.:D

Almost a year ago I was here every day, my thoughts were busy with my hair loss every day.
Finasteride was my salvation. My hair got better.
Of course, I'll never have hair like when I was 20 or 25. But I don't care about that either.

The most important thing is that the process of hair loss has been stopped.

Yes. Only took it for 2.5 months so can't gauge whether it was going to work. I started it in late April and stopped mid July, and went back on finasteride. When I started finasteride I had a receding hairline at the temples and forelock was looking a tiny bit thinner but my density was insane everywhere else. Over the 2.5 years on finasteride density went to sh*t and started even thinning on sides of head (probs would have lost anyway tho and finasteride wasn't effective). After taking dutasteride my hair on the back of my head (donor zone) started thinning. So idk if duta had a role in that, but regret ever taking the stuff. Now I am just on finasteride.

Reason I quit dutasteride was side effects tho. I initially had a huge spike in my sex drive and erection quality (like insane), after 2 weeks on duta. It lasted maybe a month, then things started to reverse and I couldn't even get hard enough for sex. So I quit. Idk if I have sides on finasteride or not. Seem to have less morning wood (maybe?) and erection quality might be worse, but I can still have sex multiple times a day.

I recommend finasteride to anyone worried about hair loss as it is the most effective approved treatment out there. I don't recommend dutasteride to anyone, especially people who have bad results on finasteride. Dutasteride seems to be extremely effective in those who have good results on finasteride, but not really for those who don't respond to finasteride. Also dutasteride rate of sides is much higher, just look at the study done for approval in Japan. I believe testosterone plays a bigger role in hair loss for many men, and dutasteride raises scalp testosterone significantly in comparison to finasteride. It might actually hurt more than help.

When did your hair start declining? Thought you had maintenance.

Man these past 3-4 months were brutal. I'm straight up nw4... this is a pic with my hair slicked back and minoxidil applied so it's obviously a worst case scenario but I lost a solid Norwood on finasteride

I've always had bfs (big forehead syndrome) which doesn't bother me too much but my hairline has went to complete sh*t... my recession is pretty stable it's the density I'm losing now

What? Your hair looks great. Thats not NW4 at all, not even NW3. Looks NW2 to me.

Zoom in and look at the thinned out forelock. It's not great hair and it's DEFINITELY not nw2
Looks really good to me. I'd kill for hair like that right now. My hair has absolutely tanked. Idk if its cuz of the duta or cuz I quit ar inhibitors for a month. but my hair is absolute sh*t now.

I do see your forelock has thinned out but still looks like good density. If finasteride isn't working just wait cuz it gets much much worse.

Such a fkn dilemma to get back on, it's a week I'm off finasteride and the amount of mental clarity I've gained back this past week is insane, not only that but I dropped like 10 pounds of fat almost which is definitely finasteride related as I couldn't lose any on finasteride.

That said, I'm definitely getting back on finasteride before I hit a month of being off the drug

I've been on finasteride for 5 yrs and drift on and off the forums but I spend maybe 2/3 of the year away.

Yes my success with finasteride has everything to do with it. I don't worry about my hairloss anymore and really just come here when I'm bored and mostly try to be helpful. Non-responders, those with sides, and those who don't take finasteride are extremely over-represented on the forums. I would guess well over 50% of guys that's stop losing hair on finasteride leave and never return.
