Information for Newbies on Nizoral

I think there is a general lack of respect for Nizoral by many people on this forum. Either in its 1% or 2% form, we must remember that it contains a drug (ketoconazole) and therefore should be treated as such. Over here in the UK we can walk into a pharmacy and buy 2% strength with no prescription - this is not the case in the US where one is required. This has lead some people to start using the shampoo a bit recklessly, for example using it every other day or even daily. Nizoral in either form should be used twice a week. It can and will irritate your scalp if used too often. I also suggest using a good moisturising conditioner afterwards and a good mild shampoo and conditioner on days you arent using the Nizoral. A good booster of Nizorals effectiveness is to use T/Gel or T/Sal as a pre-wash. Then wash with Nizoral. This will increase the absorption and effectiveness whilst reducing scalp irritation.
In summary please remember that even though Nizoral is "only a shampoo", it needs to be shown the same respect as Finasteride and Minoxidil, in order to get full benefits and minimal adverse effects from its use.

That was actually my plan (I just started it). I figured the "twice a week" recommendation was meant for dandruff sufferers simply because that's all it took to treat the fungus or whatever it is. Not that anything more was dangerous, but rather simply pointless.

But since we're after it's anti-DHT and anti-inflammation effects, using it a bit more often (like every other day) didn't seem like a bad idea.

But you're telling me that I'll be doing more harm then good to my hair if I use it every other day? What if it doesn't irritate my scalp? Is irratation the only danger? Or are there dangers involved in overdosing on ketoconazole?

Siberian,

There is no benefit to using it more than 3x a week. More is not better in this case. In fact, it will most likely add to your inflamation and can actually cause hair loss itself. Overuse will probably create an unfriendly scalp environment.

Hi Britannia, I have found your post very helpful and it sounds like know what you’re talking about! I have only started my hair come back regime in the last month, have started using Nizoral twice a week but use Head and Shoulders for the remaining days, do you think it would be more beneficial for me to use T/Gel or T/Sal if so what T/Gel or T/Sal do you buy as looking in Boots the other day there was quite a few to choose from.

I have been using Nizoral every morning for several months before laser etc. and my hair is still growing back from zero. However, I will now cut back a bit to see if the hair growth speeds up in the spring/summer.
Best to keep an open mind about even topical drugs eh?

I use it every other day but it is hard for me to leave on for full 5 minutes....probably 3 minutes is more typical.....scalp feels good.

If you live in the UK, buy T/Gel from Boots. It contains Salycilic acid which is the scalp exfoilator you need. Use the T/Gel before you use your Nizoral.

I just hope people don't expect too much from Nizoral. It's inclusion in the 'big 3' mystifies me, as people seem to treat this shampoo as a proven treatment which it is not.

following the instructions is always a good idea

Nizoral is a very important part of a regimen.

Most importantly, it kills the malaseezia yeast that is naturally occuring on all human scalps. This fungus is inherently irritating to the scalp, and the body's inflammatory response to it is similar to and synergistic with the inflammatory response that DHT causes. If left unchecked, the irritation from the malaseezia can accelerate the DHT inflammation and accelerate miniaturization.

Second, Nizoral is not an unproven, but very much a PROVEN yet mild anti-androgen that has been found to have regrowth stimulative properties on par with 2% minoxidil.

i'm not saying its not a good thing to have on your side, i use it myself. BUT as far as evidence supporting it, is there really that much? my point is that everyone includes it in the "Big 3" while there is just as much if not more evidence for the effectiveness of spironolactone, copper peptides, zinc or revivogen .

i'm nitpicking though i spose. sorry bout that, i'll stop.

the 1% version nizoral in my country is with conditioner. a period of time, i use it daily. found nothing bad about it. but i doubt it is helping more than using 2-3times per week. now i am using 2% version 3time per week. will be switching back to 1% version since study pointing that they work equally well for hair loss.

Hey.

I've recently started using Nizoral. Anyone else find that when you try and wash your hair with it, it really does cover much area? Excuse my wording but what i'm trying to say is that it doesn't feel like a normal shampoo in some ways....

Should I wash my hair with something before Nizoral as i'm not sure thats enough to keep my hair fairly clean. The bottles of Nizoral I have are small and I feel I could quickly use these up if I only used Nizoral alone when shampooing every 3rd day.

(I know I worded that all wrong but hopefully someone understands)

yeah. i understand what you mean. some suggested in this thread that you can wash with T/Gel or T/Sal before using Nizoral. sometime i simply use Nizoral twice. to save cost, you can just use any cheaper shampoo or shampoo that contain Salycilic acid.

Jeff,

Don't be so hard on yourself. You're a good guy, dealing with some very difficult times.

Take care.

I read that Ketoconazole (nizoral) helps to suppress the action of DHT, in some mysterious way perhaps, but there is a hearsay consensus which is notable.

It is easier to use if you are bald to begin with, or keep hair cut short.

When I asked my doctor for Propecia, he gave me the prescription. He also gave me Ketoconazole 2% and said that I need to use this. I was like, "Okay, never heard of it." He said that it works with Propecia. I got 8 presciptions, and it's great!
