that keep the hairs there from shedding and maybe grow new ones under what already exists? I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance.

i think we need more info to answer this one - why are you scared of shedding? are you shedding?

if the cost is of no issue then I see no reason why you shouldn't try minoxidil if you think it might help. however minoxidil is, apparently, rarely effective at the hairline (in my experience it is not very effective here)

I figure if I leave what's there alone and target where there isn't hair there could be regrowth without shedding/losing hair.

Oh I see what you mean - you don't want to put minoxidil directly on your hairline, as you don't want to cause a shed. Instead, you want to put it on the parts underneath that have already lost the hair. 2 problems with this:

1. It's hard to regrow hair on a part of the head that has already lost it all - possibly with exception to the scalp, but this is particularly true of the hairline

2. If you're experiencing recession/loss you will definitely want to apply minoxidil to help maintain thickness and promote growth. It's easier to promote growth in hairs that are miniaturizing/recently fallen out than in follicles that have been inactive for some time

Unfortunately a shed is a risk you have to take with minoxidil, but I never experienced a major shed with it with I started, so someone else may be able to fill you in on this

The worst part is enduring that initial shed, which you will most likely get (or you will make yourself think you're getting it). You always feel like it won't come back (and there are plenty of horror stories online that seem to make those fears worse). But if Minoxidil shed is anything like Finasteride shed, all you have to do is withstand it and it's totally worth the results! Go for it and just ride it out for 6 months.
