I'm not sure if I'm losing my hair or not...

I've noticed when looking in the mirror a few weeks ago that I could see an inch past my hairline under the lights in my bathroom. (I don't have any balding in the crown area) I'm only 17 years old and my moms side has no history of balding but my dads side does. But only my dad is bald out of his family(brothers, dad, etc) and he didn't go bald until he was 40-41 years old. I'm just wondering if it's in my head or if I'm really going bald. I've been looking through a number of older pictures to see if I can see the same amount of scalp, but I can't really tell.

It could just be the beginning of a 'mature' hairline and would stop at a certain point. Or, it could be the beginning of a receding hairline that won't stop (unless treated). Considering your family history I would lean towards the 'mature' hairline story, and you might follow your Dad's pattern of loss which doesn't sound too bad, considering how young some of us can experience male pattern baldness.

For now, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Keep it off your mind, live your life. Keep an eye on it in the next couple of years and if things continue a progression then you should see a dermatologist and discuss options.

I hope it's just "mature" hairline, i've been going into my bathroom and looking into the mirror every 5 minutes for the last three weeks. I have also been searching for hours and hours about hair loss for the last couple of weeks. I even have been staring at other peoples hairlines to see if they have something similar going on. I know I sound vain and stupid, but I love my hair.

I've asked my parents and my siblings if I was going bald, they just thought I was paranoid, and my dad told me to stop worrying because he started going bald well into his very late 30's/early 40's.

Yep. Going to see a derm is your best bet. And, by the sounds of things (e.g- "I've been going into my bathroom and looking into the mirror every 5 minutes for the last three weeks"), you need to do it NOW to set your mind straight.

that is exactly how i noticed mine. i was standing in front of the mirror, checking out my vibe, when i could see like an inch behind my hairline, i was like "what the f***?" and i started treatment. unfortunately, hairline is starting to move back some (i never had recession before) but still lots of little hairs on the hairline. i recommend doing something about it now. i regret not noticing earlier. the general rule is, if you think you are losing your hair, you probably are. so go see a derm

I definately think it's thinning, here is a picture.

My right side seems to be thinning more than my left. I also noticed that I just blowdry my right and not my left. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Yeah, you're thinning. Get on a regimen right away, but do your homework first.

Do you recommend anything? I don't want to put rogaine on my head everday, seems very inconvenient.

On a side note, I always thought people balded around the same age as their dad or their moms dad/brother.

Most people would recommend using finasteride (Propecia) for one year and then add if necessary. Only you can decide if you need more stuff in your regimen from the get go. finasteride most likely won't give you much (if any) regrowth but will help you maintain. If you want regrowth, go with 5% minoxidil. Nizoral shampoo 3 x weekly is very helpful as well. Nizoral, finasteride, and minoxidil are known as the "big 3".

My dad starting going bald WAY before I did, so I don't think there's much merit in that theory.

Yup you should stop it for some more years. You should get on

Propecia
Rogaine twice a day for a year then u can go to once a day after a year
a good shampo and conditioner (light that doesnt damage your hair)
and some hair vitamins. A multi vitamin, anti oxidant, clean up your diet.

man dude, we have VERY similar hair, i might be a little less thin than you up front, but same style, color and pattern (i think where you are at is where i am headed in the next two years). get on propecia at the very least man, and add some nizoral. as long as you are not at the "overly obsessed" phase yet, you can just sit back and enjoy your life while you wait for the full potential of a year on treatment to kick in.

How old are you?

Are you having good results with just nizoral and propecia?

I really don't want to be in college applaying rogaine two times a day with 5 other topical medications. Not only would it be annoying, but I would embarassed.

hey, i'm 24 years old with like, lets say a norwood 1.8?? somewhere around tehre, but hair style right now is very much like yours, and if you're like me, its getting annoying to try and spike it up with all that thinness in the front? i have been on propecia for 5 months now, and nizoral for about 1 month. it has been ups and downs for me so far. one minute i think things are really improving, and the next day i'm sure that the propecia isn't doing anything and i'm thinning out (right now i'm sort of in a slump). but i still have lots of little hairs that keep getting longer in the front, trying to "keep up" with the thinning i'm getting, hopefull they will catch up and fill in my hairline to make it nice and even. if you dont' want to apply rogaine in college i recommend nizoral shampoo (just put it in your little bag of shower stuff and no one will ever know or care) and pop a propecia pill in the morning when you wake up. trying to be less like me and don't evaluate yourself everyday, like everyone says, there will be ups and downs, but overall propecia works for most people in bringing back some hair and keeping what you got. man, best of luck, its a long ride, i still have 7 months to see how propecia really works for me so i'll let you know what the "real" results are then.
