I'm balding at 17.5 and have some questions about finasteride.

DHT has nothing to do with the epiphyseal plates. finasteride wouldn't stunt development. The bones have no androgen receptors. TBH I feel like I'd rather have hair than a hard d*ck in the morning.

I'm probably a norwood 1.5 currently. I have chronic telogen effluvium as well so it looks worse than it would normally. I'm at the end of my rope, I've got to try something.

minoxidil has nothing, and i mean 0 to do with dht, its a growth stimulant, and thats it. stop making false statements with your "bro science" please.

Bro science? I literally cited a scientific experiment in one of the most reliable online databases and u say it's bro science? Get outta here

no sex the rest of your life but hair till 80 or wake up bald with the sex drive you have now

I'm not saying that's what finasteride does I'm just wondering what people would choose

I'd choose sex because I want to have kids and a legacy but I don't believe permanent infertility has ever been observed as an effect of finasteride.

It was just more of a therotical question to see how much people care about their hair

I would choose keep my hair , it's obviously a pathetic answer to most people but to me it's more bearable

Just curious, why would you want to hang around this site if you're using finasteride and it's working? Would you recommend me getting on it?

I wouldn't worry too much about hyperandrogenism, its extremely rare. If it does happen, most likely it will subside when you drop finasteride. I only know of myself and two other users across all the hairloss forums who have it seemingly permanently.

Do you think finasteride is the best option for me? I feel like it really is my only chance. I'm currently still a norwood 1.5.

What else have you tried? There's not much other options. It's still the best treatment. You have to weigh up the risk v reward.

Is there any way to minimize my risk of getting hyperandrogenism? Maybe starting with really small doses? Also is it possible that finasteride can cause permanent infertility? Sorry for all the questions but you seem really knowledgable on this.

I guess you could start microdosing it e.g .25mg every few days. Maybe for peace of mind if nothing else. Finasteride is pretty dose-independent though meaning even tiny doses reduces DHT quite substantially. I used .5mg everyday and then tapered down to .25mg fwiw. Like I said it is really unlikely you will get a similar response to me with the burning/itching scalp so best not to think about it.

And no, finasteride cannot cause permanent infertility to my knowledge.

I just did some more research and it turns out that finasteride raises estrogen levels and estrogen is what causes the closure of the growth plates. Don't take it if you think you are still growing.

Yep eaxctly my thinking haha
Did you see my previous comment? Just want to make sure so you don't mess up any potential vertical growth.

Thank you Dench. I know this must suck for you currently. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I'm desperately praying that something can come out soon that may stop or even reverse the horrible sides you've been experiencing.

Personally I wouldn't give my teenage son Propecia. Minoxidil, I've already let him use it. (Not my 30%, but my 5%).

It's not that I think Finasteride is dangerous, I just don't know what it would do to a prostate that isn't fully
developed.
Yeah I've decided to wait until I'm 18 since I'm currently in a growth spurt and don't want to raise my estrogen levels bacause it would prematurely close my epiphyseal plates. I just have to hope and pray that my hair doesn't go "POOF" while I'm waiting.

I noticed my facial development was stunted when starting finasteride at 18, but hey just apply minoxidil to your face and that will grow you a beard :)

Did the hair never develop or did it just take much longer?

Well you said you may start taking when you turn 18 , but you will probally be in a similar situation to what you are in now

i just turned 18 so I feel kind of desperate to slow my hair loss down. My main concerns are health related.

although stopping my growth would suck, I'd rather have hair then be 2 inches taller. And this is coming from a short guy (5"6)

you know what's worse then bald? Short and bald

Agreed. But you still have to consider that you may not respond to the medication in the first place. If not, you may have ruined your chances for both hair and more height.
