I'm 22 - Receding Hairline on Temples

Hi everyone,

I've had a look around here and I'm a bit overwhelmed with options so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Basically I've always had a widow's peak, but a good hairline. I moved to England from America for 2 years and my crown started to go back quite a bit. The strange thing is that it seemed to happen very suddenly when I was living in London about a year into my trip.

The picture below (I apologize for the poor quality) shows this gigantic 'V' that I have in front of my head. The very front point of my hair seems to have stayed in place but the crown continues to go back. It's actually worse on my right side too - there's a lot more thinning hairs at the edge than on the left side. To be honest, it looks OK and I'm not going crazy. I know there's a lot of men in worse situations so I'm grateful for that. As for my family, my older brother (25) has a hairline a lot like mine but further back at the very tip of the 'V', my Dad has thick curly hair but his hairline stops at about the middle of his head, on my mother's side she has brothers that have no hair and brothers that have all their hair. It's a bit mixed up. But basically it's in my genes, and it's happening.

But, I would like to take some measures to stop or slow the progression. I've looked into a few options: Propecia scares me a bit after reading about the side effects and Rogaine apparently doesn't work for receding hairlines.

If there's anyone here that's had success with with anything - please let me know! I'm open for advice and I'd like to get started as soon as possible. It's itching every so often along my hairline, so I know it's not getting better the longer I wait.

Thanks a lot!

Whether or not rogaine works on the temples and hairline is... debated. You will see on the success threads that it has an effect for some people.

Propecia is still the best out there, at least until dutasteride passes clinical trials. And nizoral is so cheap and easy that it´s almost a must.

If you´re scared of sides, check out fluridil.

Hey man, I'm 24 now, but back a couple of years ago I'd say my hairline was almost identical to yours, so unless you wanna become a NW3 like me, I would recommend getting on the 5% Minoxidil (Regaine) right away.

It's rubbish to say that Minoxidil will not help regrow hair in your temples, if anything it will be more effective in that region than Finasteride.

I've been on Regaine 5% liquid for 5 weeks now, and already I can see tiny dark hairs beginning to grow and fill in my bald temple areas. I'm not expecting miracles from this, but if after 12months I can be back to NW2, I would be very happy.

If you combine minoxidil with Finasteride (Propecia) or some other alternative DHT blockers then you will increase highly your chances of success, all research suggest this.

However don't let anybody tell you that you can regrow you temples with Propecia alone because that is simply not possible (It's doesn't regrow your hair, it prevents more from falling out).

Best of luck anyway man & don't delay!

I think the younger you are the better chance of the big 3 working for you tbh.

Its been very well noted the big 3 don't usually start sprouting new hairs out at the front of the head, its considered a Lucky bonus if it does, its more about maintaining your existing hair tbh.

minoxidil has given be 100s of new in-active/Nert almost Grey/white hairs at the front of my head which cant be seen unless super close up, so after 3 years on the big 3 pretty much no improvement but I have kept what I have at least, its defiantly worth a try and if your younger go for it today not tomorrow.

Hey guys,

Well I went ahead and bought some Nizoral 1% along with Rogaine foam - this was really difficult to do when there was a generic product with the same amount of minoxidil and it cost a 1/3 of what I paid for the Rogaine, BUT, it wasn't the foam that everyone speaks so highly about. So far I've been using it for a couple weeks, and I already see TINY peach-fuzz hair starting to sprout in the temples. They're white, and easy to miss. I suppose this is a good sign - I'm 90% positive that this is new hair being regrown. Is this normal with Rogaine or should I just all of the sudden start seeing normal-colored dark hair sprout?

I really appreciate your responses - it's provided some good insight. Nicky - where did you get your Avodart from and how did you go about getting ahold of some? It's way expensive isn't it?

I've scheduled to see a dermatologist a week from today - I'll probably ask him for a Nizoral 2% subscription and whatever else he recommends. If he has good things to say about finasteride then I'll probably go through with it...

I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again!

Hey guys. I'm now officially on finasteride / proscar. I went to the dermatologist, sat with him for no more than 10 minutes, and walked out with a prescription. The pills are a bit difficult to quarter because they crumble easily but I'm glad I've started on this.

By the way, I found a very interesting report here: http://www.baldingblog.com/2010/09/13/m ... documents/

It basically states that finasteride is shown in studies to be just as effective in less than half the typical dosage of 1mg, AND apparently the side effects wouldn't be as strong because the testosterone levels aren't tampered with in your blood stream but it keeps the DHT lowering properties in your scalp just as much as a 1mg dose. Has anyone heard about this?

Even my Doctor felt that finasteride's side effects are dosage dependent and asked me to start with the 0.25 mg EOD for now and if things worsen up increase it to 0.25 ED and so forth. At the moment I seem to be holding up well with 0.25 mg EOD.

He's already a Norwood 3, with bad thinning.
