I was first made aware of my receding hairline last year, when I was 19, when a friend jokingly pointed it out. I'm about a Norwood 2 in terms of hairline, but I think my crown has thinned a bit as well.
I guess I should provide a bit of family history. My dad has a receding hairline, but it didn't develop in him until he was over 30, or so he says. However, I've seen a photo of his father, my grandfather, who I look very alike, at his wedding when he was 22, and he seems to have also been about a Norwood 2 back then. He's 70 this year, and I'd say he has more hair than most 70-year-olds; it's just the hairline, which still hasn't reached a Norwood 3, and a bit of balding on the crown. Going even further back to my great-grandfather, he had a Norwood 2/3 when he married at 26, and was almost completely bald when he died, so it seems pretty unpredictable. On my mother's side, my other grandpa is about a Norwood 2 now, but had a full head of hair when he was young. However, his son, my uncle, is completely bald, having been a Norwood 4 in his 20s, but I'm much more like the men on my dad's side, and I know it's false that you only inherit baldness from your maternal grandfather.
So, what should I do? I'm still vaguely holding on to the possibility that I could be like my paternal granddad, which would mean that it won't progress much further, but the apparent crown thinning seems to indicate that this may not be the case. Should I start meds now?
