Hello, im 19 and ive never realy payed attention to my hair line or thickness but now I have noticed that I have a receding hairline and quite thin hair and im not sure if I have a bald patch coming along, I dont realy see any hairs on my pillow or comeing out, I have quite a healthy diet but I smoke about 10 a day, get 7hrs sleep a night and take lymecycline and a high dose of codeine phosphate each day.
My dad is 50 and has thin hair and a bald pach but thats only recently come about and my mums dad apparently had hair loss but she can hardly remember.

Ive been reacerching the treatments on this forum and website and im planning on starting to use midoxinol and Propecia but im scared that it may make it worse.
Im not the best with cameras and my hair needs to be cut so I wet it abit to take the pictures
So im not sure what to do any help would be great.
Thanks

You have the same type of hairline I've always had. More of a horseshoe shape then a line across the head. It does look like you are thinning a bit. Makes me think I should have wet my hair a little before taking pictures to post on here, but it's such a psychological let down that I don't want to, lol. Maybe you should check out my thread to see where you will be in a few years, haha. :(

You look like you have naturally thin hair too. Since you hair is thin and seemingly densely placed, you'd probably be a great candidate for hair transplant surgery later on since you should have a large collection of donor follicles. I would suggest that you at least get a prescription for propecia from your doctor and see how it works. I have an appointment in 3 days and am going to try it out for side effects. The only thing I'm really worried about are sexual side effects, which I consider more important than aesthetic effects. If I experience any, then I'll be sure to drop the pill right away - my wife cares more about below than above, lol.. I've read accounts of people not recovering from the effects which *really* bothers me though. This whole hair recovery/saving adventure is really a journey on many levels. One hairline to rule them all, am I right?

It's like god is playing a joke on us!! haha.

For being 19, you might be far along and should expect baldness (your crown seems very thin) if you don't do something about it. The good thing is that hair transplant procedures could become much more efficient/cheaper in the next decade and propecia should/might help you keep your existing hair until then.

I don't know man. I know it's hard. It really sucks. It sucks bad. Luckily, hair on the head isn't the only thing in life - just remember that.

I hope this helps you a little at least.

I know what you mean with the side effects as taking the drug and loosing all sexual desire just defies the object as we are all worried about the hair because of the women so to permanatly loose all desire for sex while having a full head of wavey hair would be very cruel irony.

Im thinking to buy some soon im not going to go to my doctor as I know I can buy them cheaper than in a pharmacy with a private perscription as you cant get it on the NHS, if you could tell me what doseage they give you to start with and them move up to that would be great as I dont know the doseage lol.

Would I have any luck with minoxidil? when I first had the revalation about my hair thinning I freaked out and bought 6 months supply of minoxidil %5 for about £25 but now im not sure weather to use it or not. I could sell it no problem but im not sure if it would make my hair worse or if I decide to stop using it then my hair will fall out.

Im taking apple cider vinnigar extract and just wallmars skin hair and nails vitamins would there be any other vitamins that could aid me or any shampoos ?

Just out of intrest how much do these operations cost about ? I dare to think lol

Thanks for all the help its eased my mind abit
:)

Hmm, that does look similair to me around your age, very thin and I'm guessing you've never had a low straight hairline? I'll be honest with you it does'nt look good for a 19 yr old you seem to have it pretty agressive.
What did your dads hair look like at 19? You could follow some otherside of the families genetics are your uncles, grandfathers bald?

Trying Finasteride is your best hope, buy it generic (proscar) and take a dose of up to 1mg a day. Dont worry about scare stories unless you actualy get side effects. Stick with it for a year if you can before deciding if its worked.

Give finasteride some time to work, it is possible to get hairline regrowth on finasteride although it is rare. If in about half an year to a years time you do not have any regrowth or maintanince or just want to try for better regrowth then you could add minoxidil.

You only need 1mg a day max, but its often much cheaper to buy the 5mg tabs and take 1 fifth per day.

Not permanent, but i tried finasteride on at least 3 seperate occasions, playing with the dosing/etc and i definitely had side effects. finasteride was the only drug ive ever had side effects on, and i very much doubt i'm making it up. It was mental side effects, i was on the verge of being depressed and it was a roller coaster of emotions when i was on it. Very uncharacteristic of me since i'm usually pretty stoic. Now i'm back to gradually losing hair.

I was on finasteride from September 2007 until March 2008. I still haven't recovered my pre-finasteride libido and penis sensitivity. Side effects showed up on day 2 in my case. I think I might well have recovered if I had quit earlier.

What is the libido and penis sensitivity like now ? I mean I have a very high libido as im pretty young but depending on how long beofre I take codeine it can take a very long time wich has its good and bad points with the women.
Do alot of people get sexual dysfunction from it I just wached a swedish medical video on youtube of a british guy who had it pretty bad and he said he has no libido and he described it as just a lifeless peice of skin attached to his body with no connection to his brain and that kind of scared me abit.
Im just realy not sure what to do.

I've used both finasteride and dutasteride for over 4 yrs and I'm currently on proscar. I've never experienced any sides that I'm aware of.

Maybe improved a little compared to when I was on finasteride, but still unsatisfying. Orgasms are perhaps only a little weaker than normal (and take longer to reach), but the rest of the sexual sensations are almost gone. I still can get a little horny e.g. from p**rn, but I'll never get horny out of the blue no matter how long I go without an orgasm. I might not be as unlucky as that Swedish guy, but I'm basically uninterested in sex.

I don't think this kind of permanent side effect is common, but it pisses me off that Merck doesn't acknowledge their existence. IIRC (non-permanent) side effects are officially around 2% (which I find hard to believe). Only a small percentage of those who get side effects, will suffer from them long after quitting.

Because of the possible consequences of using finasteride (even though the risk isn't that high) I wouldn't personally recommend finasteride to the average guy with hair loss, but only those who are really depressed and certain they just can't accept hair loss without trying to fight it. Don't be paranoid about side effects if you do try, since they aren't that common, but if you do notice something, don't ignore it. Quitting early after noticing side effects does seem to reduce the chance of permanent side effects significantly. Of course you can post about them here if they arise and get advice.
