I think there's a range among women, but in general a lot of them don't like guys who work out. I've noticed this too.

I can manage in some contexts it can work, for example if you say you're running to raise money for breast cancer ("Oh my god that's really sweet !!!") or if you're doing yoga to get in touch with your spiritual side.

Whenever they complimented my body I always took it at face value but whenever I told them I'm not getting beer or whatever or that I ear 1900 calories on a cut then they think its vain. They like the body but they don't like that I have to work hard to get it.

Makes no sense.

I now pretend not to eat healthy when I first date someone.

This is why I tried to hide to fact that I went to the gym on my lunch break.

At a point, my coworkers realized it and there have been two kinds of people:

- The fit above average to good-looking people who all thought it was awesome and encouraged me.

- The fat ugly to average people, who just didn't say anything or were like: "Yeah right, we all know why you're doing that, to flaunt your body on the beach. So shallow!"

This is also why I never talk about my hair transplant or the fact that I'm using minoxidil.

Or that I take zinc to treat my moderate acne and astaxanthin to improve my skin tone.

All the above make me look better but I have to act like it didn't require any effort or monetary investment.

"What a pussy! Real men remain pale, skinny-fat and walk around bald with a face full of pimples!"

In the meantime, the better I look overall, the better people treat me and the nicer my girlfriend is towards me.

I've seen some guys who have such wasted potential. Average all round but no effort into their appearance. Good hair, sh*t haircut. Good body, sh*t fitting clothes. Tall, sh*t posture. Such wasted potential. They couldn't realize how much just a little bit of effort on their appearance could improve their life.

Then again this is becoming far less common even just in the last few years. I'd say the amount of young guys lifting in the gym has increased 3 fold in the last 2 years. Tanning beds are no longer considered 'vain' and I know chads who get them without shame (although there's always a few slaggings). Guys I know will unapologetically be into fashion, buy new clothes very often, choose outfits carefully, new haircut every 2 weeks, gym almost every day etc. I'd say just 10 years ago most of this would have been unheard of here.

I would not be surprised if young lads are wearing makeup in 10 years.

This has always been my view on the US. Two extremes. On the one hand they have a massive obesity epidemic. On the other hand they have some of the best athletes in the world. One the one hand they have some of the dumbest people in western societies (no offense) and on the other they have the smartest people in the world. The richest people in the world and yet a huge amount of poverty. Fundamental religion and a large amount of atheism.

UK and Ireland are a bit behind in these regards but we're always just a few steps behind.

Childhood obesity is the easiest to fix, wish schools would take it seriously.

Gyms are almost empty here in Belgium, and most regulars are not white men.

Sometimes you just have the whole gym for yourself.

It's great but it makes me worried about the gym chain going bankrupt at a point.

brb fat shaming people so they take a membership.

I live in a city of 80,000 and we have over 20 gyms. All of which are usually very busy.

Maybe its a British and American thing.

Gyms here are packed all the time and there are loads of small gyms opening up all over the place. Cross fit, boxing , MMA, all on the rise.

My guess is our obesity is going to become much more skewed towards females in the next few decades.

Not to turn this into nutrition talk again but the obesity epidemic has little to do with gyms, it's almost entirely about nutrition. The gym can give a modest benefit, but if being thin is your only priority you can do so with diet alone.

You also cannot outrun a bad diet. Three large cookies overcomes one hour on the treadmill. Cardio alone isn't going to work.

To the extent the gym matters it's that people at the gym also tend to eat well, so it's a good tracer.

That's surprising, it's actually easier for men to be obese as body mass index is biased against taller people. It goes as height^2, but the human bodys natural exponent is 2.3 or so.

I realize you are a lot more knowledgeable in this area than me, but my own personal experience goes against what you say.

How do you explain guys who eat McD's, chipper, pizza, drink beer every weekend and a few during the week, and have a poor overall diet, and yet are not obese?

Because I know many guys who are truly like this. But they gym and play football a few times a week.

My brother is currently eating over 3,500+ calories a day, and he's skinny, not even trying to 'bulk up', he just needs to eat that much with the amount of swimming he does.

I find it much easier to lose weight by running every day, instead of eating less.

All ancedotal but I've always noticed that those who are obese are also those who don't play football with us, or go to the gym with us. It seems to always be correlated with poor exercise.

This was my thinking too, they already wear eye liner at fashion shows. Then they'll be saying its perfectly normal cause pharoh wore it 3000 yrs ago

The last paragraph is a selection function, obese people cannot and should not exercise. For example running when you're obese will just destroy your knees. I also know a lot of people, and have many injury stories from people who tried to lose weight with exercise. Exercise works better when you're already thin.

It's also the case that naturally athletic people enjoy exercise more because people enjoy what they're good at.

To be clear I'm pro exercise as a component if a fitness regimen. But the first variable is diet.

Yeah this is probably what I was missing. When you're thin/fit/athletic you will be able to burn a lot of calories with exercise thus making it a good way to stay thin. But if you're out of shape you likely won't be able to burn much calories with exercise.

Plus I'm still waiting for my metabolism to slow down, all the older people in work keep telling me, as they see me going for the biscuits, it will happen soon.
