If you go to the doctor, do the tests, etc...

And you're diagnosed with this problem, and get medication, will your hair grow back to it's former state (or a better state)? If your a man, can you even get medication?

EDIT: By medication, I don't mean finasteride, or anything similar to hair care products.

not to worry my friend. did you get a TSH, t3 and t4 test done? ..if you have an underactive thyroid, regardless of whether you're a man or a woman it'll grow back gradually once you start medication. also, dont self-prescribe thyroid medication, make sure you goto a Doctor and when he prescribes it , make sure that the sides dont include losing hair cause some thyroid meds do that, they cause hairloss.

best of luck

No, I will go sometime soon for the tests.

I started reading this page, and the link Gil posted was pretty interesting. It made me think about somethings, and I just wanna check it out. If it's not a thyroid thing, then it's not and I'll go on my way (as I won't use finasteride or any of that crap). If it is, I would like to get treated (for more things then just hair, but that's a big plus none the less).

Anyone have any interesting stories about a visit with a doctor and the results?

Or if you know anything on the subject, please share.

Check your tempature three times a day for two weeks. If you maintain around 98.6 then it is unlikely your thyroid is the culprit for hair loss.

I actually started this mourning (after doing a ton of reading on thyroids last night). I've never payed any attention to it, but everytime I can remember (without being sick) I've never had an 98.0+ temp.

In the mourning I had 95.4 (retook it 2 min later) and 96.0.

In the afternoon I had 97.6 and 97.8.

I'll take it again tonight.

You just need TSH and freeT4... If they are normal the others will be normal. Some people would just recommend TSH, and do the others if TSH is abnormally low or high. The "normal" values are different for each lab, and will come printed on your lab results (ask the doctor for it).

Im not sure what the estrogen and testosterone will tell you, as normal men lose hair male pattern baldness with normal levels of testosterone. Estrogen doesnt really play a role. Those would be checked if you have symptoms of low testosterone (fatigue, impotence) or abnormal sexual development (delayed puberty, gynecomastia...).
