I think I know how to avoid gas

I just realized today: all the foods that give me gas have protein in them. Mackerel seems to give me the worst gas. I know gas from protein supposedly stinks worse than other gas, especially if it has the sulfur amino acids like methionine. Obviously we need protein, but I don't think I need 150 grams a day. My father is building muscle on 70 grams a day. In one of the HMB studies, the control group with 120 grams vs 180 grams built the same amount of muscle. I'm going to shoot for 90 grams per day. I'll just be sure to spread it out every 3 hours, and get whey after my workout.

I also think oats every 3 hours can cause gas. I'll start eating them every 5 or 6 hours instead, and have a whey/orange juice/yogart drink at the 3 hour mark so I don't mix digested food with undigested food in my stomach.

I also think dehydration makes my digestion not work well.

Finally, I think I eat too much. I'm 5'7", and I think 3000 calories is too much even when I'm working out. I think it is great for someone who it 6'0", but not for me. My father is building muscle on 1900 calories per day. He was building it on 1700 before, but just slower. He is 60 and 5'10". I noticed that my mid section just is not getting cut fast enough. I think I should eat 2400 when I'm lifting, and can do just fine on 2000 calories, at least on non-cardio days. I think 2400 may be pushing it, though it will be appropriate once I get my six pack. I heard the average woman needs 2000 calories, and the average man needs 2700 calories per day to maintain. I think that is true for the average fat american, for some tall skinny guys with high metabolism, and also for Harie since he does so many sets, but it is not true for me. I know hot women who live just fine on 1300 calories a day.

So by eating less, having fewer fiber meals, drinking more water in smaller amounts, and eating only 90 grams of protein per day, I think I'll get rid of my gas and make my stomach smaller. Less food and less gas in my intestines should make them smaller too.

I want to know if soluble fiber causes gas, or if it is just insoluble fiber. My gas did decrease when I ate less, though I felt hungry a lot. Eating no mackerel meant my gas did not stink nearly as bad.

Both insoluble and soluble fibre can give you gas. Increase your fibre intake gradually over a period of a few weeks to give your body time to adjust. This will help avoid problems of excessive gas, bloating, diarrhea, discomfort. Also eat with your mouth closed to minimize swallowed air. Avoid chewing gum and pop. If you are having unsually excessive bloating then you might want to check if it might be due to disease (IBS, Diabetes, sugar or food intolerance, malabsorption etc)

Some sources of soluble fibre (Good for lowering cholesterol, helps some with blood sugarlevels):

Oat bran
Oatmeal
Psyllium (in cereals such as Bran Buds, you can also get this in pill form from GNC)
Legumes (fried beans, peas, lentils)
Flaxseed
Pectin rich fruits (apples, strawberries, citrus fruits)


For insoluble fibre (prevents constipation and maybe reduce risks for some cancer)

Wheat bran
Whole wheat breads and cereals
Wheat bran cereals
Fruits and vegetables(including the skins)

You can try digestive enzymes or a probiotic too.

I've been eating lots of oats every day for at least a year. Is that enough time for my body to adjust? I get severe bloating, and my fiber intake is 300% the RDA. I don't think I have irritable bowel syndrome because I never go in my pants. I do dump 5x a day though, and am not constipated at all. I don't know if I have diabetes, but I have had my blood sugar tested once for something else, and they did not say I'm diabetic. No one in my family is. My father had a huge gas problem too, and finally just cut out all gassy foods, and now has restricted diet, but very little gas.

I'm going to eat a lot less oats, and mix in some potatoes and long grain white rice at the same meal, and have more banana's, as my carb sources. I'm also cutting out vegetables except for tomatoes and squash and others classified as fruits. The bloating makes me look bad, smell bad, and feel bad too.

20% of people have IBS. And when I have to dump, I often have a very urgent need to go then. Holding it 5 minutes can be torture. That is only 1/3 of the time though. But I'm not constipated and don't have diaria, and don't have abdominal pain. So maybe I don't have it. I'm eating a ton of fiber, which would explain the easy dumps, and I also have a lot of gas. So I'll see if it is just the fiber. I did notice that since reducing my protein intake from over 150 grams per day down to 90 grams per day, my gas no longer stinks nearly as bad. But I can feel the oats bloating me when I eat them.

Does it float? Ever get a stool test done to rule out parasites? You can rule out fat or carbohydrate malabsorption. Are you lactose intolerant? Maybe there is an inbalance of good vs bad gut flora.

In the meantime, just take some probiotics without changing your dietary habits and see if it makes a difference.

It does not float, at least not usually. I eat live culture whole milk yogart every day. I don't think I'm lactose intolerant, but not sure how to know for sure. I've cut out milk products in the past and not noticed a difference, but maybe I'm also intolerant to something else. I don't see any worms are anything. No blood, no mucus, nothing. Yeah, I'm sure a stool sample would tell the bacteria ratio and what is getting absorbed. I wonder how much one costs. I bet it is messy. I'll have it done for sure if reducing my oat intake does not help. I typically eat 3 big bowls of oats per day, and just put them in microwaved water that is probably 120 degrees farenheit, and let them sit there for 3 minutes before eating them. They are the 1 minute ones in the big bins. Thanks for all your help. I hope I get this diagnosed. I'm sure my classmates would thank you too.

To see if you are lactose intolerant just drink two full glasses of milk and see if you get bloated/gassy/diarrhea/urgent evacuation/discomfort. Many people have some reaction to dairy products, gluten, etc. Rule them out by exclusion.

Stool tests are extremely common and very simply and straightforward to do. You only need a drop size small sample to do all this. No big deal at all. You can have bacterial or parasitic infections and not see blood, mucus. Do this simple test so you for sure this is not the cause.

ccs, gas is caused by the fiber and carbohydrates that you eat, not protein, the bacteria in your intestine do not break down the protein much, they do thrive on carbohydrates

when you eat high fiber foods (oats) you probably put sugar on it, or it contains more simple sugars as well, which pushes them to the intestines faster because of the fiber, thus the bacteria thrive on the sugars

though i think i have told you this like 5 times already... why do i bother

I don't put any sugar on my oats. Just non-sweetened cocoa powder or flax seeds, or sometimes non-sweetened coconut. I've drank a lot more than a cup of milk at once, and don't remember having problems, but I'll do it again just to make sure. I do member getting some bloating once at the same time that I was drinking a gallon or two of milk per day when I got to take home some written off gallons. I'll try to get that test to see about nutrient absorption and bacteria ratios. With 20% of people having irritable bowel syndrome, I doubt the doctor will find the request odd.

I don't have milk with my oats. I just have milk before and after my workouts.

I guess if I have milk for breakfast, go to the gym, and then have oats later, the oats can catch up to the milk and carry it into the large intestine sooner.
Maybe I can have oats for breakfast, and then just other stuff the rest of the day, to get around that problem. But I'm thinking of just mixing a smaller amount of them in with my other food.

It's been 18 hours since I cut oats out of my diet. I replaced them with rice and potatoes. I think I passed gas twice in that time period, and it was small amounts I forced out. My abdomen feels much less bloated too. Even if a stool sample said I was not absorbing nutrients, it could be because the oat fiber passed food through my system faster than it could absorb it. So if the low gas trend continues, I'll skip that test. Here's hoping. And I was getting a bit tired of the taste of oats too. The rice and potatoes are a nice change. I'm still drinking lots of milk. I'll experiment with cutting that out too, later.

CCS, why don't you just eat like a normal, healthy person? Your constantly-changing, goofy diet isn't going to get you more pussy, or make you stronger, or make you healthier, or do anything. This is another waste of cycles you've fallen into. Sesame seeds, mackerel, oats...yet another of your freakish, unattractive obsessions.

And what could be more romantic than a candlelit whey protein shake whilst you hand feed your lover L-carnitine capsules?

Yeah, a balanced healthy diet is important. You should try to get your fibre from vegetables and fruits too. Eat a lot of leafy vegetables. Oats are healthy too but a balanced diet is important. Just cut dow on refined sugars, saturaed fat, hydrogenated oils/canned foods, etc...I am sure you know the rest...
