I have my annual dermatologist appointment tomorrow (who I get my finasteride script from). The last visit I had with him he was trying to tell me that I could drop finasteride as "unlike minoxidil you don't need to stay on it to keep your gains." I can tell that overall the guy is a little anti-finasteride and he is like a Norwood 5 himself so I can tell that he is trying to get me on his level. What should I say to him if he tries to get me off finasteride/doesn't write me a script because of what he told me earlier? If worse comes to worse I would just buy 5 mg Finasteride tablets online he if denies my script, but I would rather have a legit script.

Just let the doctor know you are doing great on finasteride and you are there for your prescription renewal. If he asked if you had any sides, make sure you say no. That's all. Once you are on a medication that you are doing well with most doctors are not going to take you off of it. Just remind him too that hair is very important to you and you feel your treatments are working great if he questions anything. I don't think he will.

@DoctorHouse 's advice is good. Def make sure you say no to any side effects...DO NOT LEAVE THAT ROOM WITHOUT A SCRIPT lol

I have to say, one thing I'm a bit concerned about myself, if I ever start losing ground again and need to bump up to dutasteride, I feel I'll need to go into the office with a specific plan for approaching the doctor on this

I would honestly go in there and say you have close friends who took the drug and stopped and suffered extreme hairloss. Mention how before finasteride hairloss has made you depressed and since finasteride you feel like your life is back on track. Just halo effect the drug, theres no reason he wouldnt rewrite the script for you at that point if you have no bad effects coming directly from the drug.

Thank you @DoctorHouse, he said that he wanted me to get blood work done which he would probably use as his "reason" why I should get off Finasteride "Look your DHT levels are in the lower range" yeah no sh*t I'm on Finasteride.

And @kj6723 if everything goes to plan (aka getting the script) I was just going to bring up about a dutasteride script for kicks and giggles. I don't wanna get on it now, but like you I just want to know if he is comfortable prescribing it once sh*t hits the fan for me. I would probably just have some studies ready on your phone to show him or her.

I actually went to a younger doctor than myself and showed him the study on dutasteride being more effective than finasteride. He said as long as I was aware of the sides, he said no problem. He was balding himself and said to me that he thinks he should try minoxidil. I told him that wont' be as effective as finasteride. He had no clue about hair loss treatments.

For me i am lucky that i have found a great endo, who accept me to prescribe duta , propecia 5 mg , andractim and even a script for a gyno surgery ( lol) if i need it .
Anyway, i just use 1 mg propecia now .
I had to search several Doctor before him

Be adamant that you want to stay on it.

If he refuses flat out--can you find a different dermatologist? if you are in USA this is usually easy maybe even can get it from primary Dr.

Michel, I have told you many times in a PM, I got sides from Dutasteride and it did not help too much so I just use finasteride now.

Prob wouldn't hurt to have a finasteride study ready showing continued usage is necessary just in case

Update: Everything went really well. He had no problems with refilling my Finasteride script. I brought up about dutasteride with it down the line and he said "I haven't written a script for it before, lemme do the research and if you feel comfortable with the possible sides effects I would write you it." Score.

Funny how doctors can be different.
My derm was actually kind of disappointed I had suspended fina because I thought I did not need it anymore after a hair transplant...
