Hi everyone, I am currently sitting here at 2:40AM with hundreds of questions running through my head and I’d love to see if someone could help me out.

My situation:
23, male. I started noticing hairloss at 18 in one temple - extremly minor and went on minoxidil for a few months but stopped due to fear of sides (didn’t get any). Here I am now at 23 with a lot more loss in that temple and now I am noticing very early stages of diffused thinning around my head. I still have 90% of my hair and is undetectable if I have my hair in a fringe.

I refuse to take minoxidil or propecia due to sides as it’s not worth it. I am about to undergo a 6 month PRP treatment plan with a well known hair transplant doctor who uses a top quality method with PRP. However if this does not work, I am going to resort to a hair piece. Originally, I was going to do SMP but hair is a significant factor in my looks, unfortunately and I think I’d be ugly without hair. So here we are, with my questions.

Questions:

1.
I would like to start off with going to a salon that specialises in hair pieces and figuring out what I want and would fit well for me. Is this a reasonable thing to do? I would feel much more happy letting someone else do the work or at least get me started so it’s not overwhelming for me. Are these salons negatively viewed apon or can they be a great thing?

2. Once the system is applied, how long can you leave it on for before you even need to re apply the glue? I would like to do it as often as possible to ensure the best look, And would it be to expensive for the average worker to just go back to the salon once a week to get it re touched up and applied instead of doing it yourself? Could someone give me a rough $ on what that would be like to do it weekly? (Re- glued)

3. Can you get a full hair system if you still have 90% of your hair? I’m talking about it re-growing underneath and would it damage your real hair?

4. What are the odds of it falling of like in those comedies? If you get a good quality glue and hair system, how likely is it to fall of whilst I work or am at the gym 5 days a week in 30c+ heat sweating a lot? THIS is my biggest hold back.

5. Can I get a Norwood 1.5 sort of hairline and it still look good? I am 23 and I think it could be reasonable? I don’t want a receded hairline look.

Thanks.

I will have a go.

1. A very good idea, a good salon that specializes in hair replacement will be able to guide you to what works best for you. They will do the template, order the system, and do the cut in. If you DO decide to go DIY, you will have a good base in which to start.

2. Potentially 2-4 weeks, depending on where you live, and your lifestyle and body chemistry. I live in a hot climate and perspire, a lot. I re-attach every week (swap between two systems). You don't need to go back to the salon for more than just the first service. You can easily learn to remove, clean and re-attach. If the salon you go toy does NOT allow you to do this (tries to dissuade you, or wants to pay for a membership fee, or something similar), DON'T go with this salon.

3. Everything depends on your hair loss, style chosen etc. Most GOOD companies will tend to dissuade you from what we call a "full cap" a system for someone with NO blendable side and back hair. They are much harder to deal with, especially for new wearers. If you side hair is so sparse (and at 90% I doubt it is), you can always go with an undercut (see my pic, you don't have to go that drastic).

4. Correctly bonded, it won't.

5. Yes, there are many different types of hairline "contours", go here: http://www.precisionhairplus.com.au/How-to-select-a-front-contour-shape

Let us know... we can help. If you feel like sharing pics, we can give you some advice on what may work for you.

Depending on where you live, we can direct you to good sources of hair systems and products (you will need to buy product).

Best,

Steve

Thank you for your very in-depth reply. I think I feel a lot more relieved knowing if I do further bald or thin, I have a back up plan that involves me having hair on my head.

I think I will have more questions as time comes however for now I only really have questions about what I am limited to and not limited to.

First of all, I am Sydney, Australia. Would you happen to have any salons you’d recommend?

I was thinking I might need to go to a salon once a fortnight to get the sides and back trimmed and kept in style with the hairpiece. My sides and back get untidy very quickly. Would this be a justified reason to go fortnightly? I would plan to clean and re apply the hairpiece once a week myself to be extra sure it looks it’s best.

My other question is would this hairstyle be do-able with a system?

Would the long hair style be to revealing of the hairline and would the other one be to short for a hairpiece?

Hi Jake,

PM @Noah for lists of Salons, I don't know of anyone in your hemisphere, sorry.

If your hair grows that fast, I guess you will need a trim, depending on your style. You don't necessarily need to have your system serviced every fortnight, however. You can do the service, yourself, removal, cleaning, and attachment is not particularly difficult.

The Beiber style does appear to reveal part of the hairline, but not drastically so, and if you go with a good system, it's NOT an issue. BTW, did you notice his hairline? The Eminem style, should also be possible, I believe you can go as short as 6.5 mm, but not 100% sure. Keep in mind, the shorter the system, the harder it is to blend.

Best,

Steve
