I have a medication question

I have badly receded temples and really want to avoid having a hair transplant. I am taking Propecia and has done a good job of stopping the recession, but my hairline still looks pretty bad. It is not so bad that there is no hope though. I really only need to lower my right side about a 1/2cm and it would still look ok when I style it.

So I am looking to take another medication in addition to my Propecia to try to regrow some hair in temple area. The problem is all the meds I look at say they are not meant to regrow hair on the temples.

So my question is.....Has anyone here had any success using meds to regrow hair on their hairline? And if so, what meds did you use?

Please give me some advice because this is my last resort before I decide to get a hair transplant.

There are only two meds the actually work, proprecia and minoxidil. Both have limited success in the hairline.

my little brother had great regrowth with just 5% minoxidil including on the temples, but then i think hes had 1 in a 100 regrowth, as nothing has given my any regrowth yet
but it cant hurt to try you might get lucky and its a lot cheaper then a hair transplant

There really are no other meds other than the ones Gorpy mentioned and both are approved by the FDA. In my experience, the younger the patient gets started on a hairloss regimen the better overall results including re-growth.

Collectively speaking, I find the guys under 25 years old and especially the guys under 23 have the best re-growth results from both Propecia and minoxidil. BUT, that re-growth took place in the mid-scalp and vertex areas.

Otherwise I have observed a number of women who experienced some new growth in the frontal zone from minoxidil applications, but not men. But what can it hurt to try minoxidil in that area to see how you respond to it.

That being said, I would wait on any surgery for right now because it sounds like you still have lots of natural hair in the front forelock and you certainly would not want to shock any of it out. It also sounds like you have the typical recession in the temporal lobe areas but have you noticed any diffusion of hair caliper in the area?

First of all Gillenator, Thank you for responding to my post.

Secondly,

What do you mean by "diffusion of hair caliper in the area"?

maxtiger,

Diffusion of hair caliper means that your individual hairs are not as fat as there were before the effects of male pattern baldness set in. In other words your hairs are getting skinny and thin. So instead of receding, the hairs get very thin and wispy and eventually you can see through them and notice scalp.

Yes there is some diffusion of hair caliper on the hairs at my hairline in the receding area.

Those are the ones that are most susceptible to shockloss. It sounds though that you are receeding more than sustaining a diffused pattern of loss. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, I am only receding in the temporal lobe area. The hair everywhere else on my head is very thick.

Think it would be a bad idea to get a transplant? I could probably get a satisfactory result with as little as 400-500 graphs. That would still leave me with a slightly receded/mature hairline, but it would be a major improvement.

Honestly, if it was me, I would wait until you need to do a little more than the 400-500 grafts because that small amount would give you approximately a couple hundred grafts on each side. There would be alot of single hair grafts and IMO that probably won't make much of a difference in your appearance. And I'm referring to how your hairline would appear to the average person. You know where and what to look for because you see your hairline more closely in the mirror. Does that make any sense to you?
