Hey, by far the best forum for hairloss I have found on the internet!

Age = 19

Over the summer (2004) I experienced one of the most stressful periods of my life. Women and work can really take their toll on a man.

During the fall my hair began a freefall out of my head. Upwords of 500 hairs were falling out a day. I immediately began 5% minoxidil. It didn't do much and I watched in horror as a large halo (maybe 4in x 4in) formed on the back of my head all within a month. The rest of my hair diffusely fell out but a large amount right there on the crown.

A dermotoligst told me that I had "Telogen Efflivium" and that my hair would grow back.

A steroid injection in to my scalp and she perscribed the following to "help speed up recovery":

5% minoxidil
Biotin (2500mcg)
Fluocinonide
Zinc 50mg
Zinc Shampoo
Multivitamen

A followup visit 8 weeks later showed significant progress, the halo had shrunk down to several small spots, one I had always had and the other a thin spot maybe the size of a nickel, with some thin hairs running around it towards the front of my head. My hairline had receded slightly, maybe a norwood 1.5 and another doctor suggested that I maybe start propecia on my next follow up visit. My hair continued to thicken and I thought I had this behind me for now. Hairloss does run in my family, but usually around the late 20s or early 30s, so I knew that I'd have to face this in the furture.

Then in mid Jan. my hair started to freefall out again. Looking through an old family photo album, I found that my grandfater on my moms side who I never knew went bald in his early 20s, I'm talking a NW6. I freaked out and went the derm and demanded to be put on Propecia. The derm held to belief that I had a relapse of Telogen Effluvium and reluctently perscribed me propecia.

This time the hairloss is diffuse over the scalp but is only on the top my head, not on the sides. My temples have receded slightly more but are still at a NW2 while the top of my head is at a NW4. This all happened in a matter of weeks...

So I am really confused, is the derm correct or am I? The hairs falling out of my head all have white bulb on the end, which I know is a characteristic of someone experiencing Telogen Effluvium. Do people suffering from male pattern baldness have the white bulbs on the ends of hair?

My hypothesis is that Telogen Effluvium acted a springboard for male pattern baldness somehow, but has anyone else ever heard of a similar or such rapid hairloss.

Atlas,
did you derm took into consideration that this could be a form of alopecia areata? I think telogen effluvium looks different (diffuse, no patches). And this would also be quite a strange male pattern baldness pattern.

Nope, the derm never suggested that it could be alopecia areata.

I just realized that the hairline pic I provided doesn't really highlight the loss in that area, my hair falls naturally to cover it up.

You can see on the left where the recession has followed the part a little ahead of the other. A high forehead is a family trait of mine, so the center of my head has not moved a millimeter even though it looks higher up on my head.

I agree with drinkrum - this looks like male pattern baldness. Maybe your doctor just thought that you were too young to be affected or something.

Sounds like Telogen Effluvium or AA to me esp if you lost that ammount of hair in such a short time.

Well, I think I'm just going to get it cut really short and see how the next few months plays out. Gah, this would be a lot eaiser to deal with if it took years and years to happen like it does on most people.

I don't know...doesn't look like typical male pattern baldness to me.

Not sure how to advise you.

What about the structure of hairs falling out due to male pattern baldness? Do people suffering from male pattern baldness have the white bulbs on the ends of hair?

I agree, It does not look like male pattern baldness. I guess it's something else happening here. I think in the long run you will be OK. It maybe some kind of fungal infection.
