Hey all,
I want to take propecia but many things worry me and turn me off:
1)the side effects on the brain:memory loss, being tired all the day, depression, brain fog, decrease in cognition, andropause, feeling as an old man
and this is worrying me the most because I spend a long period of time reading and memorizing and I have to do many exams and I am afraid even of sub clinical"not apparent" and maybe permanent effects of propecia on the brain,I really need my brain for my job!!!!
2)propecia losing efficiency after nearly 5 years and being effective most in the first year(as the studies tell)
3)being on it infinetly as long as you are alive
4)the sexual side effects.
I feel like propecia is telling me:I am not sure that I will help your hair, but surely I will ruin your life!!!!
plz Guys I need your advices to help me to take a decision.
and excuse me for my english "not my mother tongue"

take it... i did the same at first, and i can't say i regret not taking it early(because i didnt lose much since then, mby some miniaturisation) but i regret being so paranoid and scared about the 0.01% risk of actualy getting something permanent(you have worse odds each day you get in your car and drive to school)
1)those aren't even proved , and ppl just like to sue for money ..also most ppl say those appear after a long use,so no short term effects that will mess your exams up.Also its stated that they go away once the drug is discontinued.
2)its really likely in 5 years finasteride is a thing of the past.We should at least get a topical AA that will not be absorbed in your sistem. The problem is restoring hair is WAY harder and if it will be possible in 5 years(like hair replication or something) it will surely have a unaccesible price for at least 5 years. So keeping or trying to keep most of your hair early on is the best decision any sane person can do in order to have a good healthy look and a happy 20's life
3)covered in 2)
4)that shouldn't worry you that much again.. just try it if you believe hair is important ,wich i bet it is, and try not to think about sides , as placebo groups in legit finasteride testings raported sides too ,almost as much as the nonplacebo users. I just popped the first pill (and was scared really) but after the first i just begin to take it like vitamins .. not even thinking about it ,only checking out my hair condition daily and hoping to see good results
After 4 months usage im even paranoid about being on the legit stuff.I can't tell the difference between finasteride and sugar pills (hopefully they are legit hahaha).

take the plunge..if anything goes wrong (low probability of happening) just quit and you will be fine.

No.2 is completely false, hair count went UP as each year went by with the majority of people, even up to 10 years. I've seen the studies, so I should know.

You are also a victim of hysterical hypochondriacs from the internet? They feel weak erections even after minoxidil. LOL

Look, I was in big trouble several months months ago. In February this year, after a 13-months' experiment, I returned back from 10-15% to 5-6% minoxidil in my temples, and the result was an utter disaster. Not only I didn't regrow virtually any hair on 10-15% minoxidil (and the 15% minoxidil even contained 0.1% finasteride), but after the switch, I experienced a shock loss everywhere on places, where I had applied it. It was not regrowing back even after many weeks, and I already had two consultations regarding hair transplantation. Eventually, in late June, I lost patience and I jumped on finasteride.

I was also disturbed by the internet stories - mainly about hyperandrogenicity and the possible acceleration of hair loss. The first weeks were thus very unpleasant and considering that I had virtually no results with topical finasteride, I was very skeptical about the degree of effect even in case if it worked. Fortunately, it turned out that it was one of the best decisions of my life! After 6 weeks, my hair started to explode, and I have been regrowing even hair that I lost 16 years ago, even on the sides of my forehead, which I originally regarded as very unlikely. It is fantastic and the idea that I could restore my Norwood1 hairline doesn't seem utopian anymore. The combination of oral finasteride with 6% minoxidil thus produced much, much better results than 10-15% minoxidil with 0.1% topical finasteride, which is very remarkable. I think that topical finasteride is not as effective as the oral form.

You must take into consideration that forums like this attract mainly hysterical nutcases and people, who have been unsuccessful in their therapy (often due to their own stupidity). That's why the experience is heavily negatively skewed. They are very frustrated and spit poisonous spittles to all directions. They also have a tendency to extrapolate their experience to all users and spread the crap like "finasteride is effective only in very few lucky guys", "the current treatments can't stop the inevitable" etc. The truth is that finasteride lowers your DHT levels to that of prepubertal children. Have you ever seen prepubertal children balding? Some guys may be less lucky and they may suffer from other problems or bewildered hormones, but still, finasteride routinely has 80-90% success rate that has been proven even in a recent study lasting 10 years (Rossi et al. 2011). Actually, in the study of Rossi et al., 102 out of 113 people experienced a positive effect during the 1st year (i.e. a stopping or reversing of their hairloss), and only 4 of them worsened after 10 years. Those, who are not successful, have usually been unsuccessful since the very beginning of the therapy. Furthermore, even if it stopped working, you can add minoxidil or dutasteride, so the chance that you will keep your hair with current treatments is very high. And after nearly 16 years of my successful experience, I believe that it is possible to keep hair indefinitely.

IrishFella,
Thank you for your reply,
maybe I understood the graph wrong, so what does the decline in the graph mean?? and many people say that after 5 years it will lose its effeciacy

warlord,
first thank you for your extreme support
yes, reading many forums make me scared as hell!!, and also I am very sensitive guy who will be influenced even from small things and very obsessive, your last sentence"And after nearly 16 years of my successful experience, I believe that it is possible to keep hair indefinitely." is very comforting.

@verysadformyhair. I too have taken my first finasteride pills this week. They have been sitting around for a couple of weeks before using them. I kept saying i'll start at the beginning of the week, then no the beginning of the month. Any excuse to delay.

I would be very interested to hear if you have any side effects. First 3 days I was fine but now I have a constant ache in my balls esp right one and a cramp in my inner thigh. I think the cramp may just be cramp from exercise but the ball ache is deffo the finasteride. It's not painful but a dull ache.

I would also be reassured if others can confirm they had this symptom initially and it disappeared.

I've read it;s common and should go away but I've decided to switch to every other day to start with. Please let me know how you fare.

To this day, none of the 'brain' side effects have been encountered in placebo controlled clinical studies done on finasteride. Depression has been postulated to occur due to a few small studies, but even this is only thought to occur in individuals prone to the condition.

You won't know how well or for how long it will work for you. You might not get any benefit at all, or you might double your hair count and keep it for the next 20 years.

Sexual side effects are possible. They may only occur for the first couple months, be transient, be minor, or they may be bad enough that you need to stop taking the medication. There is much debate about persistent sexual dysfunction after discontinuing the medication. This is certainly a possibility, but assuredly extremely rare; likely in the realm of less than 1 in 1,000.

I have taken the drug for almost 2 years. I had some great regrowth and no symptoms except for testicular ache which has gone away. I have held a steady job for the last 7 years and do work that requires sustained concentration for long periods of time. In the time since I started on the drug, I received two promotions and am regularly commended on the quality of my work. I can say with utmost certainty that finasteride hasn't had a single negative cognitive effect on me.

Finasteride has been proven to be one of the safest and most well tolerated medications out there. If hair loss is causing you significant distress, then it is certainly worth trying. Chances are well in your favor that you will not have side effects and that you will respond to treatment.

Believe or not the first week I took finasteride I have almost every single side effect so I was so scared and stopped. But a few months later when all the sides disappeared I decided to give it another try and this time I didnt get any side effects. Looking back all the side effects I had was most likely from placebo. Its been 7 months now and I feel great. So my advice to you is dont read much into all the fear.

Hey wuffer, thank you for your reply
the side effects on the brain"if present" scares me the most, thank you for sharing your experience this definitely makes me less worried when I take the drug, and yes hair loss is causing me significant distress and always I think about it and it affects my functioning,I hope that chances will be in my favor, this will be relieving, wish me luck.
and thank you again

Hey Sharkies
Thanks for the reply
I beleive it, as the members said that every one reacts differently to the drug and the mind is very powerful to the extent it will make u feel as if you having side effects"psychosomatization" or "hypochondriasis" .
I will try not think about the drug and engage myself in work and studying so not to fear.
thank you for your advice
