Hello all brothers. I am 19 years of age, and I just wanted to share with you my current situation because I am not sure if I'm possibly balding or just insanely suicidal paranoid. I have attached 12 photos taken in the same year, this is since summer, I had the long hair, cut into short, then got a mohawk, and now a buzzcut. WHEN I got the buzzcut, I noticed that my crown what SLIGHTLY more visible than the rest of my head, although if I look close into the mirror, it's full of hair. I had my parents (One of them with medical knowledge) examine me more than 10 times. They said that it is normal and doesn't seem to be any hair loss. They said that it is completely normal to have less hair on your crown than the rest of your head and for it to be more visible because the hairs found on it are going in multiple directions. Anyways, even though that has been said, I am very paranoid that it's having a negative side effect on my health and future.

Some information:

1- Father Bald? YES
2- Paternal Grandfather Bald? NO (Full head)
3- Mother Bald? NO
4- Mother's Siblings Bald? NO
5- Maternal Grandfather Bald? NO (Full head)

What are the chances for me then? What are the thoughts of you who have experienced hair loss? Does this look normal?

P.S The crown area in the buzzcut isn't noticeable with short to long hair, just the buzzcut made me notice it... Please Help Me...

I would start finasteride only, somewhere between .5mg and 1.25mg daily, alone. This should maintain your hair over the long term. If you want the max regrowth possible you can start liquid minoxidil 5% once or twice daily too but it doesn't look like you have much potential for noticeable regrowth so personally I wouldn't bother with that. You can start nizoral 1% or 2% shampoo twice weekly (do not use daily or it will ruin your hair). All these combined are known as the big 3

You said that you have never taken finasteride. So why would you say "I would take finasteride" to someone when clearly that is not what you would do? Why don't you say the truth and say that you would take dutasteride and the other treatments you believe to be working?

Dont be like that... Hes trying to help... He took dutasteride because his hairloss was worse than OPs.

dutasteride is basically the same thing as finasteride except more powerful. If I was in his situation I would start finasteride. I give advice that is dynamic according to the state of the OP's hair, whatever that may be. If I saw someone extremely young with extremely aggressive hairloss, like in my case, I would recommend they start dutasteride. He could start dutasteride if he wanted to but finasteride is enough most likely...

His recession is obvious, and you can see thinning at the crown too. Why should he wait for his hair to get worse?

Because society is cruel and loves to feel empowered at the expense of someone else's misfortune... which is exactly why society deems mockery of baldness 'acceptable'.

Dude none of my uncles, grandfathers or my dad began balding before 40, yet I began when I was only 17. Family history just doesn't say anything about your own chances for baldness. Imagine how weird it is when your dad has more hair than you.

It looks like you are balding at the front. Or it could be a mature hairline. Your crown looks really good. Id say you are a norwood 2 getting close to a 3 but you have a really good crown. I wouldnt worry about it until you start seeing thinning in the crown.

I don't understand why you are encouraging him to not do anything about it until it gets worse. It's not like you can regrow hair like that.

Do what you can do to keep what you have right now and maybe regrow some.

You are 19 and you have been having that hair since 16, in 3 years you say your temples are the same, so there are no signals of hairloss for that time. In fact, the crown area seems to be your only worry, doesn´t it? Let me tell you it looks ok. People have to pay attention to what you write.

Regarding genetics: Not all hairloss has genetic relation, but Androgenetic Alopecia is a hairloss inherited genetically. (again people have to pay attention to words: "androGENETIC"). If your dad has Androgenetic Alopecia, you are more likely to have it but you may not have it as well.

I think the best attitude for your case (now) is conservative. That is, monitor your hair and start haircare and soft treatments if you want. But hormonal treatment/ anti-androgens are always too aggresive and risky for teen males since you are already developing. It is understandable that some boys decide to take them at 18,19, 20; but their hairloss is usually very aggresive. That is not your case, your hair looks already good and my opinion is that you should wait, nevertheless the decision is only up to you.

Although you end up developing Androgenetic Alopecia (or maybe not, remember) your balding can start at 20, 25 or 30... So just monitor your hair, if you have hairloss you will notice (you haven´t mention that you have experienced lots of hairs falling, increasing recession, thinning, etc.) and when you feel it is real (not yet), catch it and treat it.

They have asked: Why don´t start treating right now? Because you have the same hair as you were 16 yo, so you are not experiencing hairloss. In that case should most people start finasteride/ dutasteride at young ages because almost everybody is going to have hairloss sooner or later...? Not at all. Somebody asked what it is the point not to start treatment yet: Because antiandrogens are a serious matter, they are not sugar pills and are recommended only for Androgenetic Alopecia; they are tricky and to take them needs a responsible decision. And it is too soon to know if you have Androgenetic Alopecia, I insist that you have said your hair is the same since 3 years ago, so no aggresive hairloss at all.

As I have said, this is only my opinion. You can talk with your parents who have medical knowledge and probably will advice you the same as me. Also remember that dermatologists exist and they are worthy to visit. Just monitor, ask yourself about start soft treatings like ketoconazol and so and if you somewhen start to really balding go to a dermatologist be aware of all your treatment options and the possible sides of them and make a conscious decision.
