From my understanding, this article is incorrect in stating minoxidil is used to maintain hair while finasteride is used to re-grow. Amazingly, I think they actually got it reversed.

I like the sound of using Retin-A..but in the UK for 40 grams of generic stuff it's £17 from InHouse...Does anyone know how long that'd last?
Also, that article says you could ask a doctor to mix it. I could have sworn I heard somewhere that you're not supposed to mix them, you should use them at different times of the day and they become less effective if mixed...

wow...what a bad article... so short and yet they got so much wrong.

Well they obviously don't know as much as we do here. But if you find that site, and if you know nothing about treatments, at least you learned to cut proscar into 4ths and use minoxidil. Thats the most important thing anyway, most effective and cost efficient.

Anyone know if there is any truth to this? that mixin retin a with Rogaine can regrow more hair?

You sound like you've never heard of the fact that Retin-A can stimulate hair growth! :) Check out the study below:

J Am Acad Dermatol. 1986 Oct;15(4 Pt 2):880-3, 890-3.

"Topical tretinoin for hair growth promotion"
Bazzano GS, Terezakis N, Galen W.

Abstract
Topical all-trans-retinoic acid (tretinoin) alone and in combination with 0.5% minoxidil has been tested for the promotion of hair growth in 56 subjects with androgenetic alopecia. After 1 year, the combination of topical tretinoin with 0.5% minoxidil resulted in terminal hair regrowth in 66% of the subjects studied. Tretinoin was shown to stimulate some hair regrowth in approximately 58% of the subjects studied. One female subject with pronounced alopecia for more than 20 years had regrowth of hair using only tretinoin for a period of 18 months. Tretinoin has been shown to promote and regulate cell proliferation and differentiation in the epithelium and may promote vascular proliferation. These factors are important for hair growth promotion. These preliminary results indicate that more work should be done on the role of retinoids in hair growth. The synergistic effect of retinoids in combination with a low concentration of minoxidil should also be further investigated.

Bryan, I have been using .1% Retin A on my face for about a year and it tolerates it fine. I use it 2 days in a row, then skip one or 2 days and repeat. My skin has improved dramatically from the sun damage I had and I am pleased.

I have been using the .025% version on my entire thinning areas of my scalp, 1-2 hours before application of minoxidil. I use that 2-3 times per week. Over the last couple weks, I decided to try the stronger .1% in the thinning areas. I have had no problems using it 2-3 times per week so far.

Is it pointless to use the stronger version even if my scalp tolerates it well? Could I do more harm than good? Are there any studies of Retin A that used different strengths and had any increased benefit or negative consequences for higher dose?

Thank You

The Bazzano study is the only one I'm familiar with which tested Retin-A for our special purpose, so I'm not aware of any that tried different strengths. You could very well do more harm than good, if you are not VERY VERY CAUTIOUS about increasing the dose. Stop immediately (temporarily), if you start to get any kind of irritation.

If you take responsibility to write such an article you should do better IMO

Bryan, I know this is the wrong forum, but you seem to be a knowledgeable fella and I've read quite a bit of your posts (while not understanding quite a lot of it TBH!), and I was just wondering what your take on persistent finasteride side effects is? Do you believe they occur? Do you recommend taking the drug, and would you take it/are you taking it yourself?

I agree, they should do better, I'm just saying it could've been much worse. At least they're not telling people to buy snake oils.
