How To Know If It's Scarring Or Non-scarring Alopecia?

Hey,

I've been loosing my hair for a couple of years but slowly. However the last couple of months I've developed and intense itching and tingling sensation in the scalp, mainly in the areas affected by the male pattern baldness (I'm a diffuse pattern thinner) and in the same time my hairloss has been progressing aggressively. I also have mild folliculitis and lately very dry hair, as if the sebum production has gone down a lot. And some generel redness and inflammation.

I've heard that a lot of people have this DHT/balding itch. But when reading on the internet it seems that these symptoms are also associated with scarring alopecia, where inflammation of the follicles is the root cause behind hair loss. So how do we know that this balding itch isn't a sign of scarring alopecia? Is there any way to tell?

I am not sure where you live but you will probably have to go through the usual hoops and bullshit. Go to a Doctor, tell them about your problems and ask them to a referral to a dermatologist, either one you have research or one they think is adequate. They should be able to tell you on site what they think it is and if it is worth doing any biopsies on it. Also they will run blood tests to check you for any autoimmune problems which would rule out scarring alopecia.

I live in Denmark. I've already been to a dermatologist a few weeks ago, but he didn't even take a proper look at it and just confirmed that there was some inflammation. The problem is I don't know how to find a proper dermatologist, I think that they have some lists for hair loss specialists in the US but it doesn't seem like we do here in Denmark or Europe. Does anyone have any tips for finding a proper one in Europe? Or Is there any way I can tell myself?

Hey Flagermus, Denmark here as well. I am experiencing a similar problem, however I believe my problem is because some medication I have taken. I live in Copenhagen, where are you?

Hi Snooze, sorry to hear that. I'm in Copenhagen as well

Thanks... I went to a dermatologist as well, but not much help unfortunately... Avoid Hårklinikken by all means, they just want to sell their weird lotions that dont help at all...

I found a place in Göteborg (3,5 hours drive from Copenhagen) where there is a doctor specialized in diagnosing hair loss. It only costs 1200 SEK, so I think it's fair, and from the description it seems good. She mentions doing trichoscopic evaluation looking for signs of scar tissue etc. so it sounds like she knows what she's doing. Only downside is that the place mainly performs PRP treatments, so I'm sure she'll try to make me buy that as well, but that should be easily avoidable. You can PM me if you want the name (I'm not trying to advertise it).

Thank you for the tip, I had a feeling they were somewhat scammy, but almost about to try them anyway out of lack of other options.

I was using there products for a year, with no success. They basically just mix some herbs together, and ask you to buy liquid rogaine yourself and mix it with the lotion, believe me its bullshit. The person who would examine you is not even a doctor or a medical staff. And its expensive. Thanks for the Gøteborg info,if you dont mind sharing in the PM.
