I've got a derm. appt. tomorrow and hve been experiencing irritation in my nipples for 5 months i've been on finasteride. What is invloved in an estrogen test, and can she administer it right there? I'm guessing it is blood work. If my levels are normal, does that indicate that I couldn't possibly have Gyno? I need to put my mind at rest

Thanks all

I expect she will talk things over with you, and explain breast tenderness is sometimes experienced with Finasteride use and will resolve shortly. She may take some blood's just as routine check. Let us know how you get on.
By the way, Dermatologists are not specialised in this area. Hormonal related disorders are dealt with by specialist's called Endocrinologists.

So, if my estrrogen test is normal, is there NO possible way i'm developing Gyno?

Not necisarilly. Estrogen is not the only hormone that will induce gyno. It can be a combination.

By the way, slight irritation could be in your head due to a few stories you heard about people on finasteride. If you have a solid / hard lump under the breast tissue, then you could possibly be getting it. If you don't, then it's probably not. I still would recommend getting everything checked out by a Doctor though.

re:

Thanks for the responses:
I saw my Derm today and she said she noticed the irritattion on my nipples and said winter months, lack of undershirts probably just caused irritation (echto-something). She said if I had gyno, it would be very noticeable as a lump of tissue would appear. She said what I have is more of an external thing. She also said, which surprised me, that if I did get that tissue lump, it would be reversible. She said, w/ me being so skinny, I'd be able to notice a bump like that.

Also, she said an estrogen test really wouldn't prove much. She justified it, but I didn't really understand.

How does all of this sound to you guys?

I believe you wouldn't necessarily need abnormally high estrogen to get gyno since it can arise from disturbances in the ratio of test to estrogen and also through other hormones such as prolactin.

Your derm is not right about it going away though. Although in the early stages you CAN get rid of it with appropriate treatment, once it progresses and forms an actual lump of tissue the only way to get rid of it is surgery.

Loads of unqualified people on this site recommend finasteride and minoxidil all of the time.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that medical advice?
