How Much More Effective Is Duta Over finasteride

So I’m a 19 year old who has been on finasteride for approximately 14 months. I am an early stage diffuse thinner and have not had any regrowth or side affects from finasteride. I think I have been maintaining ( hard to say.)

I am happy to maintain although of course regrowth would be nice. I always think the worse case scenario happens so I feel like finasteride will not maintain my hair for a long time (10+) Years because my hair genetics are very bad.

I recently asked my dermatologist if he thinks I should switch to duta and he told me to just stay with finasteride because he said duta is only a minor increase over finasteride. From what I read on here though , Duta basically maintains hair for everyone where as finasteride tends to lose effectiveness .

I sometimes want to jump on dutasteride too. However, it seems that most guys that make the switch from finasteride to dutasteride don't really get any extra regrowth. I would add in minoxidil and dermarolling if you want some extra thickening.

Are you using minoxidil as well? And are you actually losing ground on finasteride?

I understand the temptation to jump up to dutasteride. Personally I am going to wait for the time being. I like knowing there's something more I can jump up to if finasteride loses effectiveness

If you are doing well on Finasteride there is really no reason to go Dutasteride. The only reason I am on it is because I was a non responder to Finasteride.

Well that’s the thing I am not sure if I am a responder or not. I mean in the 14 months I’ve been on it I can’t notice any significant changes in my hair but it is very hard to tell if it is slowly getting worse or not. The strange thing is I was aware of my hair loss for a year before I jumped on finasteride and in that time period my hair didn’t appear to get worse either.

Regrowth would be a dream come true but yea I just want to make sure I at least maintain. I guess I feel like if I was on duta I would feel more confident that I could maintain long term. I am looking to maintain at least 10 years hopefully more until the cure comes

Yea I agree I’m not ready to jump on Duta yet but I like having the option. I am on rogaine yea for 2 years.

I can’t tell if I am losing ground . I have diffuse thinning with a combover style so it’s not very noticeable although when I run my fingers through my hair it feels so thin :(

I believe dutasteride is ~90% DHT inhibition to finasteride's 60-70%

The tricky part about diffuse thinning is it's hard to notice that slow hair loss that occurs over time. Unlike traditional hair loss where you begin to notice the hairline receeding or obvious thinning in the crown, with diffuse it doesn't always become apparent until you've already lost a lot of ground. It's almost a mental f*** as you see yourself in the mirror everyday and you cant say with certainty that your hair is continuing to slowly thin, then fast forward 6 months to a year and you come across a picture of yourself and realize the dramatic difference.

Take pictures, that's the best thing you can do to stay fully aware of your situation.

Damn this comment is terrifying and exactly describes why I am scared. I think I am maintaining but I really can’t say for sure and that really bothers me sometimes. I do take pictures but even then ... depending on the day and light my hair can look great or bad.

Yeah you're going to want to get pictures under the same lighting so your not adding variables. Its tough but you just got to be honest with yourself. I suffer from diffuse thinning to and what I usually try doing is combing my hair backwards to fully expose my hair and basically have it be seen at its absolute worst. I obviously don't go out like this but it's a good way to see the root of the hairs and to notice actual areas or patches that are starting to or getting more thin.

Honestly man, if you have to debate if your hair is getting worse or not you're probably maintaining.

Operative word being “obvious”. I’m an NW3v diffuser but it took me ages to notice my crown. No one had mentioned it to me and the barber must have had forgiving lighting because when they used to hold the mirror up I couldn’t see it then either. But one day I used my shaving mirror and my bathroom mirror to examine my crown and under the bathroom light it was very apparent what was going on. I started finasteride within a year of this realisation, but I can’t help regret the time I lost.
