How much minoxidil to apply per area of scalp

Since people have varying levels of baldness, I'm confused as to how much area should the 1 ml cover.

Use enough to cover the balding area, however much that is. Now that my hair is really short, I can cover the entire top of my head with 1ml (diffuse thinner). But when my hair was long, full coverage with that amount was very difficult, so I used 2+ml per app. This is economically viable if you use Kirkland minoxidil which costs $5/bottle and is (from what I hear) basically, if not exactly, equivalent to Rogaine.
